car, you probably think of a traditional gas-powered sedan. These have been the standard for police departments nationwide, but certain roles may benefit from switching to electric vehicles.In the case of the Chevy Bolt EV and EUV, the Special Service Vehicle package is designed for police work, but it might not be the work you expect.
These electric police vehicles are going to be used for parking enforcement. This makes sense, as parking patrol roles are low-intensity and do not require the more powerful cars that are used for pursuit.

What's in the SSV?
The Special Service Vehicle package contains equipment that turns regular cars into cop cars. With the SSV, the Chevy Bolt EV and EUV are fitted with sirens and lights that are familiar to police vehicles. They also feature a Surveillance Mode, which allows them to turn off all lights for moments where police may need to remain hidden.
In addition to the police equipment found in the SSV, the Chevy Bolt is perfect for the roles of low-intensity policing because of how quiet it is. Gas-powered cars feature loud combustion engines. EVs do not have these, so they are silent by comparison.
This ability to be stealthy makes EVs ideal for parking meter monitoring.
Police departments
that want to move quietly to find expired parking meters may have a winning formula by switching to EVs. Can you buy an SSV?
With Chevy adding aftermarket features to their Bolt EV and Bolt EUV, drivers may think they want to convert to an electric vehicle. If the Special Service Vehicle package sounds appealing, the bad news is that consumers cannot purchase them. You will have to stick to a regular Bolt EV or EUV instead.
However, you will not be missing much by not having the SSV. While the package adds police features like lights and sirens, it does nothing to improve the power of the car. The tires and maximum range of the EV are the same in the SSV as in regular versions.
That is not to say that a base market Chevy Bolt EV or EUV should be ignored, though. The EV can travel 259 miles on a single charge, which is impressive for
electric vehicles
on the market right now. The Chevy Bolt EV may not be the fastest electric vehicle out right now, but it could be a great car for driving around town. As the market for electric vehicles grows, they may become more prominent in roles like police vehicles. Right now, it does not seem like the Chevy Bolt EV or EUV are going to be used in any high-speed chases, but they may be waiting to give you a ticket if your meter expires.
