What started the investigation of Honda Accords?

As reported by Autotrader, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is looking into Accord models.
ABC News
said that two crashes and two injuries were reported. NHTSA has received over a hundred complaints of drivers losing steering control of the Accord and veering off their intended path.
Electric power steering assistance was a new feature for the 2013 model of the car, which is supposed to reduce the effort it takes for drivers to steer. With the push toward
electric cars
, the electric steering assistance system has undergone several upgrades through the years. In 2015, NHTSA investigated the power steering assistance loss but found no manufacturing defects.

What can you do if you have problems with your Honda Accord?

Honda is cooperating with the NHTSA while doing its own review of the models affected. The company says that if you own an Accord with a steering issue, you should take it to a Honda dealership for any repairs.
ABC News reported a complaint in December 2018 from an owner in California about losing control of their 2013 Accord. The car was going down a small hill when it suddenly veered to the left. The owner crossed several lanes of traffic and hit a building. Both the driver and passenger were injured in the incident.
Other owners have also found their Accord turning left or right on its own, and the issue was replicated by Honda's mechanics. This problem affected one of the owners who petitioned for the investigation. Their 2013 Accord was not covered under a 2015 extended warranty since mechanics couldn’t find the digital trouble code for it.

Should you drive your car while it’s under investigation?

No recalls have been issued yet and neither NHTSA or Honda have advised owners to park their vehicles. There are over 1 million Accords on the road, and the steering issues have only affected a small percentage of vehicles so far. However, be sure to keep an eye out for any updates from Honda and NHTSA.
In case of any unexpected accidents, you want to make sure you have coverage ahead of time.
