Always wanted to pack your family into a
Tesla
Model Y and ride off into the sunset? Well now, thanks to Hertz, you can…if only for a few days.
Check out why you might want to reserve this model for your next epic vacation.

Hertz has skin in the game

Top rental car companies are further committing to the electric vehicle game.
In October 2021, Hertz announced a deal to buy 100,000 Model 3 Teslas. These autos are available at select U.S. airports in California, Georgia, Florida, and D.C. (Dulles). And now, the company plans to add the Tesla Model Y to its growing electric vehicle collection.
Though Tesla’s stock shot through the roof at the time (surpassing $1 trillion in market value), Hertz wasn’t offered a special deal to purchase these vehicles. Elon Musk was asked and confirmed it. Hertz’s plan was to receive its entire order of Model 3s by the end of 2022.
According to
Electrek
, “Tesla wasn’t so sure that it would be possible, but Hertz has already been taking a lot of deliveries and the automaker is still guiding deliveries of new Model 3 orders by the end of the year.”
And Hertz is ready to obtain the Model Y. In fact, the rental company listed the electric SUV on its website in late March.
However, “it’s not clear whether the Model Ys will be part of the goal to add 100,000 EVs or if they’re in addition to the Model 3 order. Based on Hertz’s communications from last year, the latter would make more sense,” Electek tells us.
Hertz is also doing business with Uber, making its Tesla fleet accessible to drivers. To start, 50,000 Tesla vehicles will be available, and if successful, the company can grow the program from there.
We just hope football star Tom Brady keeps popping up in Hertz’s commercials for their “Let’s Go” campaign.

Excellent fuel economy and maximum comfort

Renters can get excited about driving the Tesla Model Y around on their upcoming adventures. The seven-seater gets up to a 330-mile range and offers 471 lb-ft of torque. That’s a better range than the Model 3, which comes in at 260 miles.
The Long Range model gets about 131 mpg in the city and 117 mpg on the highway. The Performance model comes in second with 115 mpg in the city and 106 mpg on the highway.
The midsize SUV features an AWD dual-motor powertrain and a convenient Supercharger network for long-distance drives. You won’t get falcon-wing doors like the Model X, but you will get an interior very similar to the best-selling Model 3.
The Model Y has spacious seating and an airy cabin. With ample cargo storage, there’s plenty of room for your suitcases and gifts for your mother-in-law. Though it's small and lacks LATCH safety anchors, the auto does offer an option for a third-row seat.
You’ll also want to make sure not to get too fixated on the touchscreen-focused controls, as even owners of the Model Y are known to get distracted.
According to
Edmunds
, some changes have been made to the 2022 Model Y that include “a new, lighter 12-volt lithium-ion battery (replacing the traditional lead-acid one) to laminated rear windows to better insulate the cabin from noise.”
Tesla claims to have more substantial Model Y changes coming our way in the near future, like potentially changing the battery pack design.
