background
Billionaire Elon Musk is famous around the globe for his ingenious company that started the EV craze:
Tesla
. But Tesla isn’t the only company that Musk owns, and in many ways, the man’s business ventures are intrinsically tied into the future of modern societies around the world. As he’s arguably one of the most powerful men in the world, it’s worth knowing what companies Musk owns—and how they potentially affect the world’s future.
You may not own any companies of your own, but we bet you probably own a car—and if you do, it’s worth making sure that you’re not overpaying on your current

#1: Twitter

Elon Musk recently made headlines the world over after he acquired one of the largest social media platforms to-date: Twitter. As a hub for political debates, moral arguments, and rants of all kinds, according to
AS
, Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion, nearly 20% of his total wealth. Such a pricey investment indicates that Musk sees value (and possibly power) in owning such a dominant social media platform.
As for what his plans are concerning Twitter, Musk hasn’t revealed much, other than that, as quoted by AS, he believes “Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated.”

#2: SpaceX

Tesla may be the most profitable automotive company in the world, but when it comes to space travel, SpaceX could be the future of transportation—off-planet.
SpaceX is perhaps the most ambitious of all of Musk’s companies. He plans on using SpaceX to make space travel affordable. But he also plans on using the company to help humanity colonize Mars. Who knows; maybe in the future we’ll see Tesla-brand surface rovers exploring other planets.
But in all seriousness, NASA has been put on the back-burner for close to a decade, meaning that SpaceX, whether we like it or not, could be our best chance of ever visiting the Moon, Mars, or other worlds.

If Tesla creates the most revenue, Twitter is the most talked-about, and SpaceX is the most ambitious, then Neuralink must be the vaguest company that Musk owns. If you’ve never heard of it, we aren’t surprised. It's a neurological research company that aims to treat serious brain diseases, such as Lou Gehrig’s disease, as well as to implement AI into our everyday lives in a seamless way.
Neuralink hasn’t been front-page news since Musk founded it in 2016, so whether we’ll ever see his brain-based company come to fruition is yet to be seen.

#4: The Boring Company

Don’t balk at the name—The Boring Company is anything but. This venture was also started in 2016 as a way for Musk to dive into the world of city planning and infrastructure development. At present, Musk wishes to build underground tunnels for cars, but critics have pushed back against this idea, saying that affordable, mass public transit, such as light rails or bullet trains are far more affordable and space-conscientious.
While Musk is certainly reaching far into niche areas of modern society with his business ventures, he has a knack for investing in industries that are vital to humanity’s future. Let’s hope he’s a trustworthy steward.
