How to check your Subaru WRX’s gas tank size

If you’re hazy on your WRX’s fuel capacity, you can verify it yourself in a few easy ways.

Measure the gas tank

You can discover the volume of your WRX’s gas tank with just a tape measure and a calculator. First, measure out the length, width, and height of your gas tank, then multiply those numbers together. Then you’ll divide that answer by 231 (the number of cubic inches in a gallon) to find out your gas tank capacity in gallons.

Consult your owner’s manual

If you’ve got your owner’s manual stuffed away in a glovebox, whip it out and open it up to the table of contents or index. To find your answer, just scan for  “fuel tank capacity” or similar wording.

Drive till empty, then fill it up

You’ll have to get gas anyways, so one of the easiest ways of discovering your gas tank capacity is to just drive your WRX until the fuel gauge hits “E,” then fill it up. The number on the gas pump won’t give you the precise measurement of your tank, but it’ll be pretty close. Be sure you don’t drive very far on empty, though!

How to save on fuel costs in a Subaru WRX

The 2022 Subaru WRX earns a combined 21 mpg, but this number will vary depending on the year model and configuration you’re driving. Subaru plans on releasing an all-electric WRX STI model in the future, but in the meantime, here are a few simple ways to optimize your fuel:
  • Stay on top of maintenance. Keeping up-to-date with all of your routine maintenance will keep your engine running smoothly and your fuel economy in top shape.
  • Drive with care. Regularly accelerating quickly, along with hard braking, will consume more fuel and affect your fuel economy long-term.
  • Avoid idling, specifically in winter. Don’t keep your WRX running to warm it up—drive it gently instead.
