background
Lexus’ Intuitive Parking Assist is an optional feature available on most models and uses front and rear bumper sensors to detect objects close to your vehicle when reversing or parking.
As one of the most popular luxury vehicle brands on the market, Lexus employs an incredibly humble—but useful—Intuitive Parking Assist system to help keep you, your passengers, and other drivers safe when parking or driving at very low speeds.
But if you’ve never owned a Lexus with this feature before, it can be tricky to figure out on your own—that’s why we’ve put together the following guide detailing everything you need to know about using Lexus’ park assist.

How to use Lexus’ Intuitive Parking Assist

If your Lexus is equipped with an Intuitive Parking Assist system, it can be turned on or off using the steering wheel commands or via the center display using the instructions below:
  1. Select the car icon.
  2. Select “Driving assist.”
  3. Select “Intuitive parking assist” to change ON/OFF
When parking assist is enabled, the intuitive parking assist indicator will turn on as a visual reminder. As long as this feature is enabled, the sensors will kick in whenever the vehicle is put in reverse and a buzzer is sounded when an object enters the sensors’ various detection ranges.
If you want to change how loud the buzzer is, you can do so via the center display:
  1. Select the gear icon.
  2. Select “Driving assist.”
  3. Select “Collision mitigation.”
  4. Select “Parking assist volume.”
In addition to the buzzer sounding, the location of an object detected by the sensors will be displayed on either the Lexus parking assist monitor or the Panoramic view monitor (if equipped) to alert the driver of the object’s position and distance.

Precautions when using Lexus’ Intuitive Parking Assist

Keep in mind, however, that Lexus’ Intuitive Parking Assist system is not infallible—certain objects, for instance, may not be detected by the sensors, including:
  • Sharply-angled objects
  • Low objects
  • Fences, ropes, wires, etc.
  • Snow or other materials that dampen sound
  • Tall objects whose upper sections protrude outwards towards your vehicle
Similarly, certain conditions—such as fog, extreme temperatures, inclement weather, loud noises,
high winds
, etc.—can keep the sensors from working properly, in which case they may not detect objects in a reliable manner.
If your Lexus’ parking assist sensors are dirty or covered by ice, water droplets, etc. the multi-information display will flash “Clean Sonar,” in which case you’ll need to wipe the sensors off for them to function properly.

How does Lexus’ Intuitive Park Assist system work?

Your Lexus’ Intuitive Park Assist system is a sonar-based parking aid, which means it uses sound waves to detect objects in close proximity to your vehicle. This is done using sonar sensors located in the front and rear bumpers, all of which have varying ranges of detection—when an object is detected, a buzzer will sound as an alert.
Buzzer frequency is determined by how close the detected object is, so the longer the time between beeps, the farther away the object is—a continuous buzzer means the object is very close and at risk of being struck.

Do all Lexus vehicles have Park Assist?

In the technical sense, no, not all Lexus vehicles have park assistance as a standard feature—but all modern Lexus models can be equipped with an Intuitive Park Assist system if bought new at a dealership, for an additional fee.
All modern Lexus vehicles do, however, come standard with a Lexus Safety System+™, which makes use of similar technology and includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, intelligent high beams, and dynamic radar
