The iconic
Dodge Challenger
has a long history as a rival pony car to the equally legendary
Ford Mustang
. The SXT trim became a part of this history in 2012 to keep the Challenger’s base level in line with the rest of
naming schemes. Even this most recent iteration still highly resembles the large and luxurious 1970 OG.
With a borderline supercar like this, you may feel like you can go just about anywhere and everywhere, but you’ll want to check some important specs first—like ground clearance. We're here to help with everything you need to know about the Challenger SXT’s ground clearance, how this affects its drivability, and some advice for lowering your

2022 Dodge Challenger SXT ground clearance

The minimum ground clearance for the base-level 2022 Dodge Challenger SXT is 5.2 inches, regardless of drivetrain, but the optional Dynamics package with 20-inch wheels may see this number increase slightly. The SXT shares its minimum ground clearance with the
Challenger GT
, but the
Challenger SRT
brings this spec down to 4.5 inches.

Dodge Challenger SXT ground clearance over the years

The Challenger SXT has only seen a little variation in its ground clearance since hitting the market in 2012. However, it was a renaming of the earlier
Challenger SE
trim, which did take a few years to find its height. Here’s what that evolution looked like:
  • 2009 Challenger SE: 5.5 inches
  • 2010 Challenger SE: 5.7 inches
  • 2011 Challenger SE: 5.2 inches
  • 2012 Challenger SXT: 5.2 inches
  • 2013-2015 Challenger SXT: 5.1 inches
  • 2016-2022 Challenger SXT: 5.2 inches
The Dodge Challenger will see its final year of production in the 2023 model year. Given this pony car’s track record, the 2023 SXT’s ground clearance will likely stay where it’s been at 5.2 inches.

What is ground clearance—and why does it matter?

A vehicle’s ground clearance tells you the lowest distance between the equipment on its undercarriage and the road below. This spec essentially tells you how safe your undercarriage equipment is from bumps and debris on your driving surface. It’s a major determinant when it comes to the kinds of roads and surfaces you can drive your car.
A car that’s designed with higher ground clearance is typically intended for a wider variety of driving surfaces and terrains. A car with a lower ground clearance—like the Dodge Challenger SXT—is typically only designed for flat, paved roads, but with other advantages in mind. Lower riding cars tend to exhibit better handling and can benefit from a more aerodynamic design

Is the Dodge Challenger SXT a good off-road vehicle?

The easiest answer is no, but this is a complicated question for the Dodge Challenger SXT. The qualifications for a good off-road vehicle typically come down to a powerful engine, AWD, additional features to improve handling and traction, and a minimum ground clearance of 8.5 inches or higher. The Challenger SXT falls more than three inches short to be considered a good off-road vehicle, but it does have some other qualifying factors.
The SXT comes standard with a 3.6-L V6 engine with 303-hp and 268 lb-ft of torque. This is a pretty solid engine, though most of its power likely goes towards propelling the Challenger’s notorious extra weight. However, the challenger is also advertised as the first and only car in its class with the option for AWD. This upgrade could see the muscle coupe tackling a wider variety of flat terrains—gravel, snow, wet road—but it likely won’t help with uneven terrain, considering the SXT’s other specs.
