What is an interstate highway?

Interstates are a part of a large network of highways that connects multiple states throughout the country. Currently, there are over 42,000 miles of interstate highways.
Their numbering system is what identifies and organizes them. Generally, odd numbers mean that the interstate runs north to south and even numbers (like I-76) imply that it runs east to west. And if the number ends in a zero or five, it usually means that it is a more important route.
