background
To get the most out of your 2010 Honda CR-V, you’ll need to stay on top of regular maintenance tasks, like oil changes. Use 4.4 quarts (4.2 liters) of oil to fill your engine.
Taking good care of your vehicle is the only way to make it last, but sometimes
routine car maintenance
is a hassle. If you want to lower your overall maintenance costs, you can learn to change your own oil—just make sure you’re using the right amount and type for your CR-V.
Are you up for the challenge but don’t know where to start? We’ve got all the oily details you need to take care of your 2010 Honda CR-V.

2010 Honda CR-V engine oil capacity

All 2010 Honda CR-Vs are equipped with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, and they all have an oil capacity of 4.4 quarts (4.2 liters)
Be sure to note that the
engine displacement
number—the 2.4 liters of volume taken up by the engine’s cylinders—is not the same as the 4.2-liter oil capacity. If you get these numbers confused, your engine won’t have enough oil to run smoothly, leading to major and expensive engine problems

What kind of oil does a 2010 Honda CR-V need?

Now you know that your CR-V requires 4.4 quarts of oil at every oil change, but what kind of oil do you need? That’s right—not all oils are created equally, and different engines require different types. According to Honda, your 2010 CR-V will need full synthetic SAE 0W-20 oil.
Not sure what that means? Let’s break it down.
The numbers in this oil grade refer to its viscosity or how thick it is. The 0 tells us this type of oil has a low viscosity at freezing temperatures during the winter (“W”), and the 20 indicates that the oil is still thin at boiling temperature (212°F). That means this oil will keep your CR-V running smoothly in both frigid and super-hot temperatures.
Honda suggests using full synthetic oil in your CR-V to best protect your engine. Look for
Honda Genuine
motor oil on the shelves of your favorite auto shop or Honda dealership. Just be sure to get at least 4.4 quarts!

How often to change the oil on a 2010 Honda CR-V

Before you spend your money on an
oil change
, you should make sure your 2010 Honda CR-V actually needs one.
If you’re using synthetic oil or a synthetic blend, you can generally go around 7,500 to 10,000 miles between every oil change. If you’re using
conventional oil
, however, you’ll want to change your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles
It may be hard to keep up with these mileage ranges, so get in the habit of
checking your oil
around once a month to keep your eye out for signs it needs changing, including the following:
  • Your oil is dark brown or black, like soda. (Clean oil is amber or light brown, like a cup of tea.)
  • Your oil has a gritty or coarse consistency.
  • You notice foul odors, like the scent of oil, smoke, or burning.
  • You hear abnormal noises coming from the engine.
  • Your CR-V isn’t performing as well.

How to change your oil and oil filter

When you’ve decided your Honda needs an oil change, you can either take it to a mechanic and pay an average of $50 to $100—or you could change the oil yourself.
If DIY is more your speed, you’ll need to gather your tools, those being a socket wrench, drain pan, and filter wrench. It’s also a good idea to have a few rags on hand in case of any messes. Of course, you’ll also need a replacement filter and 4.4 quarts of 0W-20 oil
Before you get into the nitty-gritty, run your CR-V for about five to 10 minutes to warm up the engine. This allows your oil to get nice and thin so it will drain more easily. Afterward, cut your engine, engage your parking brake, and follow these steps:
  • Pop your hood and remove the oil filler cap
  • Locate the oil drain bolt under your CR-V. Place your drain pan directly underneath it.
  • With a 17mm socket wrench, remove the drain bolt and drain your old oil, being careful not to get hot oil on your hands.
  • Remove your old filter with your hand or a filter wrench.
  • Using the new oil, lightly lubricate the new filter before placing it with your hands, being careful not to tighten it too much.
  • Once the old oil is done draining, replace the drain bolt.
  • Remove the oil filler cap, then add the new oil, using a funnel if desired.
  • Replace the oil filler cap
When you’re done, run the engine for about 30 seconds to give the new oil time to settle, then use the dipstick to make sure you’ve added the right amount of oil. Check for any leaks around the new filter or drain plug.
Cleaning up is an essential part of the process, but it’s important that you never dump your oil on the ground, in a drain, or in the garbage. Instead, pour it into the empty oil bottle, then take it to a local auto parts store or recycling center.
