2005 Honda Odyssey engine oil capacity

Let’s get right to the essentials: exactly how much engine oil does a 2005 Honda Odyssey require?
The 2005 Honda Odyssey has a 3.5-liter V6 engine with an oil capacity of 4.5 quarts or 4.3 liters. Don’t mistake the engine’s oil capacity, the required amount of oil for a successful oil change, with the engine’s displacement which is the volume the engine’s cylinders take up—the 2005 Honda Odyssey has an engine displacement of 3.5 liters.
Engine displacement and oil capacity are two different things

What kind of oil does a 2005 Honda Odyssey need?

Now that we are aware of how much oil is needed for your Honda Odyssey, we can figure out what type of oil is necessary. You heard that correctly—when it comes to engine oils, cars have a type! It’s vital to adhere to the manufacturer’s oil recommendation to avoid damaging your vehicle. So, when you go to pick up the oil, don’t just look for the cheapest five-quart brand on the shelf.
Your Honda Odyssey needs a premium-grade 5W-20 detergent oil with an API (American Petroleum Institute) Certification Seal on the bottle. Honda recommends the use of Honda Motor Oil, but synthetic motor oil is also acceptable, as long as it is the right weight and has the API seal.
With all the letters and numbers above, oil types can appear very confusing at first. So, let’s break it down. The “5W-20” code represents the viscosity of the oil, or how thick the oil is, at different temperatures. The 5 in “5W” represents the low viscosity the oil maintains at 0°F, while the “W” refers to winter. The 20 represents the oil’s viscosity at the engine’s normal operating temperature.

How often to change the oil on a 2005 Honda Odyssey

For the Odyssey, Honda recommends you change the oil according to the intervals displayed on the odometer/trip meter or on your multi-information display. Typically, this means changing conventional motor oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles and changing synthetic motor oil every 7,500 to 10,000 miles.
This is a wide range, so to pinpoint when your oil should be changed, check your oil level at least once a month or every other time you refuel. Here are some of the signs your Odyssey might be due for an oil change:
  • Your motor oil has a dark brown or black shade. (Oil that doesn’t need to be changed has light brown color).
  • Your oil feels coarse.
  • Your engine is making unfamiliar sounds.
  • Varying level of performance for your Odyssey.
  • If you notice new smells specifically oil, smoke, or burning.

How to change your oil and oil filter

First things first, make sure you have all the gear needed to start. You will need a socket wrench, a drain pan, and a filter wrench capable of removing the old filter. As for replacement materials, five quarts of premium 5W-20 motor oil, a new washer, and a replacement filter are all you will need.
The first step is to run your Odyssey until the engine reaches normal operating temperature. This should take about five minutes. After that, turn off your car, pop the hood, and follow these instructions:
  • Remove the oil cap
  • Get beneath the engine and remove the oil drain bolt and washer
  • Let the old oil into the drain pan
  • Remove the old oil filter and watch out for hot oil!
  • Install the new filter
  • Reinstall the oil drain bolt using a new washer and tighten it
  • Refill the engine with your new oil and replace the fill cap
After that, run the Odyssey’s engine and be on the lookout for any leaks. If the
oil pressure light
on the Odyssey dashboard turns itself off, you’ve successfully changed your oil.
Use your dipstick to check the oil level.
The last step is to dispose of your dirty oil responsibly. Seal it in a closed container and drop it off at your local recycling center.

Don’t forget to check up on your insurance policy
