Subaru Forester Limited vs. Forester Touring trim levels: which is better?

The Subaru Forester Touring is a higher trim than the Forester Limited. It costs a few thousand dollars more and provides some additional luxury comfort and safety features on top of the features of the Limited trim. If you’re looking to save money, the Forester Limited is a better choice, but if you really need heated rear seats, the Forester Touring may be worth your while.

Price

The 2022 Subaru Forester Limited starts at $33,000, while the Subaru Forester Touring raises that price to $36,420.
There are three trims below the Forester Limited: Base, Premium, and Sport. There is also one trim between the Limited and Touring, the Wilderness, which starts at $33,945 and offers a version of the Forester that’s geared more toward off-road driving.
The Forester base model of the 2022 Subaru Forester starts at $27,070. The high-value Premium trim starts at $29,320, and the sport trim starts at $30,890.

Performance specs

So how different are these two models in terms of performance? Well, they have the same engine, that’s for sure. They also get the same upgraded 18-inch alloy wheels. Because of this, performance is essentially the same between both trims. Let’s look in more detail at how these different Forester trims perform.

Engine and transmission

The 2022 Subaru Forester engine is a 2.5-liter flat-four with 182 horsepower @ 5,800 RPM and 176 lb-ft of torque @ 4,400 RPM.
On both the Forester Limited and the Forester Touring, power is managed by a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and symmetrical all-wheel drive (AWD) with Subaru’s X-mode, limited slip differential, and hill descent control. Car and Driver tested a 2022 Forester Wilderness that was able to reach 60 mph from 0 in an uninspiring 8.0 seconds.

Weight and towing

Both the Subaru Forester Limited and Subaru Forester Touring have only a 1,500-pound towing capacity. If you want to unlock the maximum towing capacity of the 2022 Forester, you need to purchase a Subaru Forester Wilderness, which offers 3,000 pounds of towing capacity.
The curb weight is a bit different between the Limited and Touring trims. The Forester Limited weighs in at 3,552 pounds, while the Touring is slightly heavier—3,594 pounds.

Fuel and mileage

Each of these models has the same fuel economy, and both use regular gasoline. They each get 26 mpg in the city, 33 mpg on the highway, and a combined 29 mpg.
The Wilderness trim is geared more for off-roading and towing, and it’s the only 2022 Forester trim that has worse fuel economy than the other models.

Interior and exterior dimensions

The Subaru Forester Limited and Subaru Forester Touring have the same exterior and interior dimensions. Space is quite generous compared to other compact SUVs.

Technology and safety features

Technology features are the main place where these two models differ. While the Subaru Forester Limited trim gets many of the most desirable extras available, the Subaru Forester Touring gets even more, including an upgraded sound system.
You’ll find the same complete suite of safety features and EyeSight driver-assist technology on both trims. These include the standard-issue automatic braking and adaptive cruise control available on the base trim. Both the Limited and Touring also get the additional blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert and Automatic Emergency Steering available on the Subaru Forester Premium trim. It’s all included with both Limited and Touring trims.
There are a lot of technology features that are similar between the two. The Limited trim gets the same tech features as the Premium trim, such as folding, heated side mirrors, a panoramic power moonroof, keyless entry, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Extras added by the Limited trim include automatic high beams, a power liftgate, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Starlink, and dual-zone automatic climate control
Where connectivity is concerned, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and USB ports are all present options.
While some of the Touring’s extra features are available for an extra charge on the Limited trim, the Subaru Forester Touring is the total package. The last things that the Touring adds from the list of available features are a Harman Kardon 9-speaker audio system upgrade, a power-adjustable passenger seat, reverse automatic emergency braking, voice-activated navigation, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, a DriverFocus distraction mitigation system, and gesture-controlled temperature adjustment.

Seating and comfort

The Subaru Forester Limited trim adds a perforated leather upholstery upgrade to replace the standard seating material. Both front seats and back seats get plenty of space, and seats are well-supportive all-round. Both Limited and Touring models get the leather-wrapped steering wheel from the Premium trim.
Headroom and cargo space are slightly lower in both the Limited and Touring Forester trims thanks to the moonroof. Overall, these upscale trims of the Forester offer the utmost quality and comfort when it comes to seating. A power-adjustable driver’s seat also offers extra comfort.
