WHY YOU CAN TRUST JERRY
Jerry partners with more than 50 insurance companies, but our content is independently researched, written, and fact-checked by our team of editors and agents. We aren’t paid for reviews or other content.
Before purchasing the 2022 Lexus ES, you should take a closer look at some of its top competitors like the Acura TLX, the Cadillac CT5, or the Volvo S90.
Are you in the market for a mid-size luxury sedan? With a starting price of $42,025, the 2022 Lexus ES is a great option, thanks to its quiet and smooth ride and plush cabin. However, savvy car shoppers always take time to compare their top choice against its major competitors.
To make your comparison shopping process a bit quicker, the
car insurance
super app
Jerry
has compiled a comprehensive list of the ES’ top eight competitors. We’ll go over price points, selling points, and even weaknesses and even provide a side-by-side breakdown. Then, we’ll teach you how to use our super app to save big on your Lexus ES insurance costs

1. Acura TLX

Starting price: $39,995 to $54,795
Selling points: Affordable starting price, sporty styling
Weak spot: Small trunk, cramped back seat, not as luxurious as some of its competitors
The 2022 Acura TLX kicks off our list thanks to its attractive and sporty exterior, as well as its very affordable starting price (especially when compared to other luxury sedans).
Its low price doesn’t mean low quality, however—both the 272-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and the 355-hp turbo 3.0-liter TLX V6 impress thanks to a communicative 10-speed automatic transmission and optional all-wheel drive.
The inside of the TLX is equally as sporty as the outside. Unfortunately, while the driver and front passengers sit pretty, the back seat is a bit cramped. You won’t find too much space in the trunk, either, especially when compared to other vehicles in the TLX’s class.

2. Cadillac CT5

Starting price: $38,690 to $51,490
Selling points: Low base price, powerful engine options
Weak spot: Slow base engine, basic interior, minuscule trunk
Looking for a sedan with a more classically luxurious exterior? The 2022 Cadillac CT5 serves as another respectably-priced option. And while its base-level engine is admittedly pretty poky, the optional 335-hp twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine is the epitome of power.
Unfortunately, the CT5’s interior doesn’t feel quite as luxurious as some of its competitors. Even top trims, which offer gorgeous open-pore wood trim, rely heavily on cheap-looking plastic features.
Technology doesn’t lack, though! The recently updated and incredibly logical CUE infotainment system is displayed on a 10-inch touchscreen, and controls are supplemented by a rotary wheel. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard while a head-up display, wireless device charging, and an eight-speaker Bose audio system are available as options.

3. Volvo S90

Starting price: $53,895 to $62,095
Selling points: Respectable fuel economy, comfortable interior, hybrid option
Weak spot: No V6 engine available, lacks basic tech features
The 2022 Volvo S90 may not come with the option to upgrade to a V6 engine (like so many of the sedans on our list), but a plug-in hybrid option is available. Both options offer impressive fuel economy, with the standard powertrain earning EPA ratings of 23 mpg city and 31 mpg highway and the PHEV powertrain reaching an impressive 66 MPGe combined.
Inside, you’ll find tons of room and high-end features, such as genuine leather, beautiful wooden trimmings, brushed metal accents, and—in some trims—14-way power adjustable seats. The only thing the interior lacks? Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring—a standard feature, even on more affordable vehicles.

4. Genesis G80

Starting price:  $49,345 to $70,795
Selling points: Loads of standard features, surprising towing abilities
Weak spot: Looks a bit like a Hyundai, higher trims get pretty pricey
Every inch of the 2022 Genesis G80’s interior will make you feel like you’re riding in the lap of luxury. Expensive-looking materials, an abundance of soft-touch surfaces, and a classically sexy dashboard make driving around in the G80 a true experience. Plus, you’ll enjoy head and legroom that’s unmatched by most other luxury sedans of the same size.
On the outside, this Genesis looks a bit like a Hyundai, but with a bold honeycomb front grille design.
Higher trims are quite expensive, but you won’t need to splurge to enjoy standard features like 19-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, three-zone automatic climate control, a power trunk lid, and a 21-speaker Lexicon stereo system.

5. Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Starting price: $56,000 to $73,950
Selling points: Available V8 engine, elegant design
Weak spot: Unimpressive base engine, not very sporty
If you’re looking for something sporty, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is not for you. But if you’re looking for something classy and elegant, this luxury sedan is the way to go. Only two trims are available as sedans (the other two trims are a coupe and a cabriolet)—but they happen to be the most affordable options.
Choose between three distinct engines and either rear- or all-wheel drive. You can also upgrade to the E450 trim, which is powered by a turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine with a 48-volt hybrid system that doubles as an electric supercharger. You’ll enjoy both speed and smoothness—just be sure to give yourself plenty of time to brake.

6. Audi A6

Starting price: $56,995 to $70,595
Selling points: Smooth ride, tons of high-tech features
Weak spot: Not particularly sporty, basic exterior styling
The 2022 Audi A6 is, in many ways, exactly what you think of when you think “luxury sedan.” It doesn’t look or behave anything like a sports car—instead, its exterior is pretty simple and streamlined. Either engine pairs with standard all-wheel drive (called “Quattro” by Audi), offering a steadily smooth ride.
Inside, you’ll find more high-tech features than the average person knows what to do with, including a standard 10.1-inch display, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, onboard Wi-Fi, Audi's Virtual Cockpit digital gauge display, and a 10-speaker audio system.
All of this exists in a modern interior trimmed with supple leather, rich wood, and tasteful metal trim. The interior is functional too! The rear seats are easy to fold down, allowing for ample cargo space, especially when compared to other luxury sedans.

7. BMW 3-Series

Starting price: $42,445 to $55,695
Selling points: Massive trunk, combines luxury and sportiness well
Weak spot: No V6 engine option
Of all the luxury vehicles on our list, the BMW 3-Series may just feel the sportiest. Both of its powertrains achieve power and smoothness while incredibly responsive brakes keep you safe at any speed.
The 3-Series remains affordable, with the entry-level trim serving as an incredibly desirable option. All-wheel drive doesn’t require you to move up trim levels—you can add it as a standalone option for just $2,000.
Another standout feature? The 3-Series sedan has an incredibly sizable trunk with 17 cubic feet of cargo space—much larger than most vehicles in its class.

8. Volkswagen Arteon

Starting price: $42,045 to $50,845
Selling points: Comfortable cabin, gorgeous aesthetics
Weak spot: Interior lacks refinement, just as expensive as more luxurious brands
While VW isn’t always considered a luxury brand, we think the 2022 Volkswagen Arteon is a great competitor for the Lexus ES—in part because of its comparable price point.
On the outside, the Arteon is VW’s most attractive vehicle. The inside, however, doesn’t quite live up to a luxury label.
Only one engine is available: a 300-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. On upper trims, you can upgrade the powertrain with all-wheel drive. Either way, you’ll be able to smoothly go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds—pretty impressive for a vehicle without a V6 engine option.

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
