background
You may be surprised to learn Lamborghini doesn't make a single sports car with butterfly doors! The iconic Lambo door is actually a scissor door that swings up, not out.
From Huracans to Gallardos, Lamborghini supercars have given us some of the most stylish features in the industry, including Y-shaped headlights and cockpit-inspired consoles. Butterfly doors are often mistaken for Lambo doors, but they're not the same thing. Technically speaking, all Lamborghini doors are scissor doors!
To clear up the myths and misconceptions, here’s a complete guide to which Lamborghinis have butterfly doors—or more so which don’t—and the other types of doors and Lambos. And if you’re itching to add a set of vertical Lambo doors to your car, we'll show you how.

What are butterfly doors?

Butterfly doors hinge at the front of the car, swinging upwards and fanning out. Fully extended, the door windows roughly parallel the road—just picture a butterfly sitting in the palm of your hand and fanning its wings. While they first featured on supercars such as the Enzo Ferrari and McLaren F1, they've since fallen out of fashion, unlike Lambo doors.
Scissor doors hinge at the front of the car and rotate upwards without tilting. They’re also known as flap doors, beetle-wing doors, turtle doors, switchblade doors, spider doors, and—most famously—Lambo doors. While they were originally developed for the 1968 Alfa Romeo Carabo concept car, Lamborghini refined and popularized them. Quite a few fans were disappointed when the company removed scissor doors from the Huracan and Gallardo.

Other supercar doors

Human imagination knows no bounds, and neither do car designers and engineers. There are plenty of other unique sports car doors, from the gimmicky to the unbelievable. They’ve been featured on
Audis
,
Mercedes-Benzes
, and even
Toyotas
!
Gull-wing doors hinge on the roof and swing upwards, giving the car the appearance of a bird in flight. Also known as falcon-wing doors or up-doors, most people associate them with the time-traveling DeLorean from Back to the Future. The most recent car to feature gull-wing doors was the 2010
Tesla Model X
, but one driver grafted them onto a Corvette C5 limo!
Suicide doors have door hinges at the rear and swing backward, almost as if the car is throwing open its arms to hug you. Before they earned their macabre moniker, these coach doors were associated with elegant French carriages and early automobiles. However, as cars became more powerful, coach doors tended to spring open on their own, often dragging their unfortunate owners behind them. Keep this in mind if you’re considering the new 2020
Lincoln Continental
Coach Door Edition.
Don’t get us wrong: canopy doors are a cool concept, but they’re kind of goofy-looking, too. T hood and roof pop off in one piece on a hinge at the front of the sports car (much like a Tupperware), leaving you and your passengers to climb out. Featured on the conceptual and Aston Martin, they're certainly not something you see every day.
Other quirky doors include swan doors, retractable sliding doors, and the front entrance door, but the crown jewels have to be the dihedral synchro-helix actuation doors. Named for their inventor, who designed them for the 2002 CC8S, Koenigsegg doors aren't satisfied with a simple tilt or a lift. Oh no. They have door hinges at the front and open outward before sliding forward and finally rotating up to allow the driver to emerge—no doubt to thunderous applause.

Which Lamborghinis have butterfly doors?

Now that you know the difference between butterfly doors, Lamborghini doors, and scissor doors, let's move on to the big question: which Lamborghinis have butterfly doors?
None of them! There are no Lamborghinis with butterfly doors—only scissor doors, aka Lambo doors. They might look cool, but they don’t have the forward tilt that gives butterfly doors their trademark look.
Don’t believe me? Let’s take a closer look at the Italian make’s most recent models:

2022 Lamborghini Urus: regular doors

MSRP: $225,500
Engine: 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8
Horsepower: 641 hp
Torque: 626 lb-ft
While the Urus has a modest engine (for a Lambo anyway), it has the off-road capabilities and all-wheel drive you’d expect from a super SUV. You'll also find 18-way power seats with heating, ventilation, and massage functions, so you can bring a bit of civilization into the wilderness. It may have Lamborghini's distinctive Y-shaped headlights and taillights, but it lacks either vertical Lambo doors or butterfly doors.

2021 Lamborghini Aventador: Lambo doors

MSRP: $417,826
Engine: 6.5L V12
Horsepower: 730 hp
Torque: 507 lb-ft
Low and lean, the Aventador was built for adventure. Although it has sumptuous bodywork and a central console straight out of a sci-fi movie, it doesn’t have butterfly doors. Its Lamborghini doors slice upwards without fanning out.

2022 Lamborghini Countach

MSRP: $2,640,000
Engine: 6.5L V12
Horsepower: 814 hp
Torque: 557 lb-ft
No one can deny that the Countach has head-turning looks. It's sleek, slim, and (if you're being unkind) kind of squashed. And if you happen to catch it on the racetrack, it’ll take your breath away as it roars past at a top speed of 220 mph. However, none of the 112 units ever manufactured had butterfly doors.

2021 Lamborghini Sian: Lambo doors

MSRP: $3,700,00
Engine: 6.5L V12
Horsepower: 819 hp
Torque: 531 lb-ft
The first hybrid Lamborghini doesn’t compromise on power or style. Upon starting the car, you'll see the Y-shaped headlights flash, the rear spoiler flip up, and the Lambo doors rotate forward. There were only 63 made and each one was completely customized, but none of the options included butterfly doors.

Can you add butterfly doors to a Lamborghini?

The answer is yes and no. Theoretically, it’s possible, but kits are few and far between and you’re more likely to find mislabeled Lambo door conversion kits. You'll need to order custom hardware and commission a skilled installation bodywork expert.
Vertical Doors Inc.
sells Lambo door conversion kits that allow drivers to install scissor doors on every make and model of car imaginable, including
Corvettes
,
Camaros
,
Chargers
, and
Mustangs
. Kits are made in the USA and include gas shocks, hinges, mounting hardware, and more. Even better, they’re completely reversible if you change your mind.
Right now, Vertical Doors Inc. offers a kit for two Lamborghini models: the Huracan and the Gallardo.

2003-2014 Lamborghini Gallardo

There are only two things that could make a 543-hp Gallardo even better: one is a driver’s side spider door and the other is a passenger’s side spider door. This $6,000
Lambo door conversion kit
includes a bolt-on hinge that’s much easier to handle than weld-on alternatives. Installation isn’t included in the price, but there are video tutorials and customer support if you want to try to do it yourself.

2014-2022 Lamborghini Huracan

Vertical Lambo doors were missing from the new Huracan, but now you can add them for $6,500.
Vertical Doors Inc. hardware
is made from domestic hardened steel and requires modification of the front door lip. Just note that you could forfeit your car’s manufacturer warranty by tampering with the bodywork.

Yes, Lamborghini doors are sometimes mislabeled as butterfly doors, but they’re actually scissor doors.
Regular car doors and butterfly doors are both hinged at the front, but butterfly doors attach to the A-pillar of a car’s frame. They open out and up, spreading out like a butterfly’s wings.
