How do you reprogram a Toyota key fob?

I’m not entirely sure why, but my Toyota key fob stopped working once I returned from vacation. There’s no damage to the fob, and I replaced the battery, but it still won’t work. My wife said I should just reprogram the key, but I have no idea how. How can you reprogram the key fob for a Toyota?

Having a faulty key fob can be incredibly frustrating, and hopefully, reprogramming the key gets you on the road again!
To reprogram a
Toyota
key fob: Step one: Open the driver’s side door, keeping all of the other doors closed and the key out of the ignition. *Step two: Within five seconds, insert and remove the key from the ignition twice, without turning the key. Step three: Within 40 seconds, close and then open the driver’s side door twice. Insert and remove the key from the ignition without turning the key. Step four: Within 40 seconds:
  • Close then open the driver’s side door twice.
  • Insert the key into the ignition and leave it there.
  • Close the driver’s side door.
  • Turn the ignition to on then back to off without starting the engine.
  • Remove the key from the ignition.
  • *Step five:** Within three seconds, the doors should lock then unlock automatically to indicate you are in programming mode. Repeat steps one through four if the doors do not lock and unlock automatically.
  • *Step six:** Within 40 seconds of entering programming mode:
  • Press and hold the lock and unlock buttons on the remote simultaneously for just under two seconds and then release.
  • Press and hold the lock button for two seconds. The doors should automatically lock and unlock to indicate the key was programmed successfully.
  • If the doors lock and unlock twice, the key was not programmed successfully, and you need to repeat the two steps above.
  • *Step seven:** Open the driver’s side door.
If the above steps don’t work, you’ll need to order a replacement for about $200, which isn’t cheap. If you want to save some money and help offset the cost, use
