Mazda Miata overview

In 1991, the Mazda Miata was only in its third year of production. It was known in Japan as the Eunos Roadster and in North America as the Mazda MX-5 Miata. This first generation of Miatas was inspired by British sports cars in the post-war era and came with various package options.
The base model came with manual windows and steel wheels but no air conditioning or power steering. The “A Package” upgrade included a cassette stereo, aluminum alloy wheels, a snazzy leather-wrapped steering wheel, and power steering. The “B Package” went a step further with cruise control and headrest speakers, and the “C Package” added a tan interior and top with leather seats.
Finally, racers could opt for the “R Package” designed for racing. Special editions like the 1991 Mazda Miata were classified as “M Editions.” These M Editions included all the luxury options for the “C Package” alongside special paint and wheels.
Over time, the MX-5 won many automotive awards and rose to fame, becoming the world’s best-selling sports car.

What’s special about the Special Edition?

The 1991 Mazda Miata’s Special Edition featured that year's Grand Prix color: British Racing Green (BRG). Only 4,000 were made in America, with the Special Edition being the only US option for the MX-5 that year. In Britain, it was known as the “Limited Edition” in celebration of the MX-5’s first anniversary in the UK.
Mazda went all out with the BRG special edition. The exterior featured the iconic green paint and a tan tonneau cover. Inside, drivers enjoyed tan leather seats, a Nardi-branded wood shift knob, a wood handbrake grip, and a special badge on the center console to indicate its uniqueness.
1991 was also the first year the Mazda Miatas had the option for buyers to have an automatic transmission and anti-lock brakes. The Special Editions also included air conditioning, a CD player, cruise control, and headrest speakers.

1991 Mazda Miata Special Edition vs. M2-1001 Cafe Roadster

While Mazda was releasing the 1991 Mazda Miata Special Edition in the US, they also released the M2-1001 Cafe Roadster in Japan. This “limited production” roadster was even rarer than the ‘91 Miata, with only 300 vehicles produced. Here are a few M2-1001 Cafe Roadster key specs
  • Special Blue/Black Mica paint
  • $26,000 starting MSRP
  • 1.6 L engine
  • 131 bhp @ 7,000 RPM
  • 109 lb-ft of torque @ 5,500 RPM
During the short run of the M2-1001 Cafe Roadster, prospective buyers in Japan had to show up in person (a novel idea these days!) to the M2 Tokyo Headquarters just to get a chance at this super-limited roadster.
It ended up being so popular that people were paying almost $10,000 above the asking price to get their hands on one of these rare sports cars.
So, how does the 1991 Mazda Miata Special Edition compare to the M2-1001 Cafe Roadster? For starters, the MX-5 will be significantly more affordable—and much easier to find
That being said, both of these 1991 Mazda special editions will be challenging to get your hands on! If you’re lucky, you’ll be driving a classic piece of history with one of these ‘91 Mazda convertibles.
