While the Mercedes-Benz 2020 head-up display (HUD) gives a driver essential details in their field of vision and improves safety, you’ll need to decide if it’s worth the extra expense.
If you’re considering getting a 2020 Mercedes-Benz, you’ll want to decide what kinds of extras to keep an eye out for when looking at available cars. While some extras can add to your overall experience, like the audio options, a head-up display helps with safety.
Let’s look at the pros of having a HUD, the cost, and the how-tos of using a HUD if you have one.

Mercedes-Benz 2020 head-up display: what is it and do you need it?

So why do you want to consider getting a head-up, or heads-up display (HUD)?
Usually, you have to check the dashboard for important information, like your speed, but a HUD projects key details onto the windshield so it’s easier to see, plus you don’t have to look away from the road.
The Mercedes-Benz version uses a small projector, while the area on the windshield in front of the driver is specially treated to aid in displaying the images. You can customize which options you want to view using the HUD, but most HUD models include options such as:
  • Your current speed
  • Road information, such as speed limits
  • Detailed navigation instructions
  • Warning messages
  • Entertainment information, including Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™
  • Telephone and call details
You can adjust things like how bright the display is, how high up the windshield it is, and how many items display at the same time. This helps you avoid
distracted driving
and other potential hazards as you drive. You can also use features like Mercedes-Benz Night View Assist®, which allows you to spot pedestrians and animals at night.

Which Mercedes-Benz 2020 models have a head-up display (HUD)?

In the case of Mercedes-Benz, you can pretty much take your pick of 2020 models since most of them can have a HUD, however, it’s not standard equipment. The heads-up display option could be added to any vehicle, but if you’re looking at used models, then it will depend on whether the previous owner opted for the extra expense.
The 2020 models had a HUD option for $1,200 that owners could add on. The HUD is available for the following models:
If you are looking for a used model with the head-up display installed, it will depend on the specific vehicle—the option was not a standard feature for 2020 models. While the price tag might seem minimal when compared to the overall expense of a Mercedes-Benz, you’ll still need to decide if you want to go out of your way to find a model with an existing HUD.

Can you add a head-up display to a Mercedes-Benz 2020?

Since you are looking at used models for the 2020 Mercedes-Benz, you might have more luck adding on a head-up display than finding an existing model with everything you want. There are a variety of options available for you when it comes to an aftermarket HUD—you just want to consider the added expense before you commit to one.
Since the Mercedes-Benz version relies on specially treating the windshield for the display, you would be looking at replacing the windshield and installing the HUD, so it can easily run a good $2,000 for installation. It also depends on the local dealer—not every dealer offers the installation option. Basically, getting a genuine Mercedes-Benz version could become tricky.
However, aftermarket options, such as an
OEM retrofit kit
($1,100), might work with your specific 2020 model. You can also get non-Mercedes-Benz options for a range of prices that go from $60 to $450. While they won’t be made specifically for your vehicle, they offer you a way to add a HUD.

How to use the Mercedes-Benz 2020 head-up display

While a head-up display might seem intimidating because it looks so high-tech, it’s really a matter of using a few buttons to control the system. If you have a 2020 model with the HUD built into the system, you should see a HUD button on the left side of the dashboard that allows you to turn the system on and off.
To adjust your HUD settings, you can do the following:
  • Click on the “Home” button on your steering wheel, swipe up once on the Touch Control button to get to the “Settings” screen
  • Choose the “Head-Up Display” option using your up/down arrows, then press “Okay.”
  • Click on the steering wheel’s “Home” button, and swipe up twice on the Touch Control button to get to the “Settings” screen.
  • You can choose which option you want with the up/down arrows, then select “okay” once you have the category you want.
  • Use the up/down arrows to adjust settings and press “okay” when you have the settings you want.
You can turn the HUD off, so if a specific driver decides they do not want the display on, they can power it down. You can also use the menu on your Infotainment touchscreen to adjust the settings. Of course, be sure you are parked before you make any changes for safety reasons.

Is a Mercedes-Benz 2020 head-up display worth it?

A Mercedes-Benz 2020 head-up display isn’t considered a must, which is why you won’t find it as a standard feature, but there’s also a reason it’s offered as an optional add-on. It can make it easier to drive safely since you don’t have to look away from the road for important information like your speed.
The bigger question is the cost and effort factor since you’ll either have to search for a used 2020 model that already has the HUD equipped or have an aftermarket option installed. Either way, you’ll be looking at adding time and money to the cost of your 2020 Mercedes-Benz.
Obviously, you’ll have to decide what your priorities are for your vehicle. A head-up display can help minimize safety concerns by keeping your eyes on the road, but you’ll be looking at adding to the cost. You’ll have to balance out which options are right for you.
