Why your 2002 Honda CR-V needs a radio code

Unless you’ve been prompted with the “code” message on your car radio before, you probably haven’t spent much time thinking about radio codes. They exist, though, to help deter thieves from stealing your stereo system.
But your stereo currently displaying the “code” message is clearly not stolen, so what’s going on? Your 2002 Honda CR-V will require a radio code when the system has been disconnected from its power source. This most frequently occurs when your battery dies or gets replaced.
If you don’t know where to find your radio code, this theft deterrent can become an annoying barrier to your daily music fix.

How to find your 2002 Honda CR-V radio code

Before you start looking around your car for a code, try resetting your radio first. To do this, press and hold the power button down for a few seconds. If that doesn’t get your radio working then you’ll have to do a little digging.
To find your 2002 Honda CR-V radio code, start your search in your glove compartment. Check your owner’s manual or look for a sticker in your glove box for the “Anti-Theft Radio Code.” The radio code should be five digits long, and only contain numbers.
You might also find your radio’s serial number on this sticker, this is different from the radio code but might be necessary information if you have to take your search online.

How to look up a 2002 Honda CR-V radio code

2002 was a pretty long time ago; a lot of things can happen to a sticker over 20 years. If you can’t find your radio code in the glove box or the owner's manual, you can still find your radio code online. You’ll need your
Honda vehicle identification number (VIN)
and the radio serial number.
Your VIN can be found in a few places. On your
vehicle registration
documents, insurance card, and written on your dashboard at the base of the windshield or on the driver’s side door jamb.
To find your radio serial number, there are two strategies. First, try this: hold down buttons 1 and 6 simultaneously, turn the radio on and keep holding the buttons for a few seconds. This should display the 10-digit serial number on the screen. If that doesn’t work you will have to pull your stereo system out of your dash. The serial number will be written on the back of the stereo system.
Once you have your VIN and serial number, you can retrieve your Honda CR-V radio code in a few ways:
  • By using Honda’s
    online retrieval tool
  • By calling Honda customer assistance at 1-800-999-1009
  • By visiting a honda dealership in person

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
