Comprehensive Commonwealth Car Insurance Review

Commonwealth Casualty Company is a home and auto insurance company based out of Phoenix, Arizona—and it’s ideal for drivers who want no-frills car insurance. They’re not as big as many major insurers, but Commonwealth ranks well in the list of the top car insurance companies of 2023, according to first-hand reviews analyzed by Jerry’s research team.
Jerry
experts conducted one of the most extensive car insurance reviews in the United States to collect car insurance information over 18 months.
After reviewing the data from over 120 insurance providers, our experts ranked Commonwealth 14th overall compared to companies of similar size and popularity.
Here’s a breakdown of how our verified Commonwealth policyholders ranked their insurers:

We surveyed over 18,000 policyholders from all 50 states, asking them about their experience with their insurance company’s customer service, renewal process, claims handling, and more.

So, is Commonwealth a good insurance company?

Overall, yes.
Our experts analyzed nearly 150 real customer reviews from Commonwealth and found that of those reviews, 69% of respondents had positive things to say about the insurance provider, while just 7.69% of the reviews were negative.
Compared to the national average of only 64% positive reviews and 18.54% negative reviews, Commonwealth ranked just above the average, suggesting consumers are happy having auto insurance with this provider.
That said, Commonwealth Insurance tends to cater to Arizona and Texas drivers on a budget by providing low-cost auto insurance. They don’t offer a large selection of add-on coverages like many other larger insurers, so they may not be the best option for drivers looking for extensive coverage. But if you want to cover the basics without spending a fortune, you may find Commonwealth a good choice.
The good: Positive Commonwealth auto insurance reviews focused on affordable policy pricing, app ease of use, and prompt communication. They also enjoyed:
  • The loyalty, and reward programs
  • Billing options
  • Positive claims process
The other side: Negative reviews focused on limited coverage options, no mobile app accessibility, and coverage availability.
We asked policyholders to rate Commonwealth on their affordability, claims experience, customer service, and renewal process.

Will Commonwealth raise your rates?

Like all insurance carriers, Commonwealth can only increase your premium when your policy is
up for renewal
Some of the reasons your premium might increase with Commonwealth include:
  • New violations or tickets
  • New accidents
  • Change in address
  • New vehicle on a policy
  • New driver on a policy
  • Inflation
  • Age
According to our survey, 78.5% of drivers with an existing Commonwealth auto insurance policy chose to renew at the end of their policy term.
Remember: It’s important to understand that policy prices aren’t consistent, and insurers frequently change how they price their policies. As such, you can expect some variation over time—even if there are no changes to your driver profile.

Does Commonwealth resolve claims fast?

car insurance claim
, but the inability to file a claim online might make for a lengthier process. However, they do have an in-office claims adjusters available for personalized service.

While ranking 8th for claims processing compared to other insurance companies of similar size, the 2.3 out of 5.0 rating for claims and resolutions suggests most Commonwealth customers are not satisfied with the company’s claims processing.

Commonwealth car insurance discounts

For drivers looking to reduce costs, discounts are an essential area. However,
car insurance discounts
are one area where Commonwealth falls short—this provider only offers a few discounts
Here’s a breakdown of the available discounts with Commonwealth Casualty Car Insurance:
  • Multi-Policy Discount: Save on your premium when you bundle your auto insurance with your home or
    renters insurance
    .
  • Vanishing Deductible Discount: Although not a typical discount, you can add the vanishing deductibles benefit to your policy and reduce your deductible by $100 for every year you go without an at-fault accident on your record. Although it won’t reduce your monthly payments, it can considerably reduce the amount you pay when
    filing a claim
    .
  • Safe Driving Discount: If you have 3 to 5 years of safe driving experience in Arizona, you may be eligible for a reduced insurance rate. You must not have had any speeding tickets, at-fault accidents, or other severe violations on your driving record to be eligible.

Commonwealth coverage options

Auto insurance coverage needs will vary between drivers due to individual circumstances and state regulations. Commonwealth offers many
types of car insurance
to meet the basic insurance needs of policyholders and several optional coverages that can be added to policies for more comprehensive coverage.
Typical insurance coverages from Commonwealth include:
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage
: Pays for medical bills if you’re involved in an accident with an at-fault driver who doesn’t have insurance or doesn’t have enough insurance to cover your expenses. Uninsured motorist coverage is required in some states.
  • Medical Payments
: Covers the cost of medical expenses or funeral costs for you and your passengers, even if you were at fault.

Commonwealth ’s additional tools and services

Commonwealth also offers a variety of additional coverages, including:
  • Rental reimbursement
: If your vehicle is damaged in an approved claim and is being repaired, rental reimbursement coverage covers the cost of a rental car.
  • Accidental death and dismemberment: If you or a passenger are seriously injured or killed by a drunk driver, Commonwealth Casualty will cover the costs (up to the determined level) for funeral and medical expenses.
  • Rideshare coverage
: If you drive for a ride-sharing service, rideshare coverage fills in the gap where a company or personal insurance package leaves off while they’re on the job.
  • Coverage for custom/additional equipment: This add-on coverage provides up to $2,500 for aftermarket equipment installed in your vehicle, including
    coverage for upgraded sound systems
    , aftermarket cameras, or rims.
  • Safety Equipment: If your headlights, taillights, or windshield are damaged in a car crash, this coverage pays for the repair or replacement of the glass components of those elements—and there’s no deductible. This is only available if you have comprehensive coverage.
  • Roadside assistance: Roadside assistance, also called
    towing and labor coverage
, helps cover the cost of flat tire repairs, towing, battery jumpstarts, emergency fuel deliveries, and more.
Commonwealth also offers drivers the ability to remove the named driver restriction. Under normal circumstances, only the named driver on a Commonwealth Casualty insurance policy can drive the car. If you purchase this coverage, non-resident drivers will also be allowed to legally drive your car and be covered by the same policy in case of an accident.
Note: Coverage options may differ based on location, so contact your local Commonwealth Insurance agent to see what’s available in your area.
