How to interpret car specs

That may just look like a bunch of random numbers if you don’t know much about cars. Here’s a quick guide to some key car terms:
  • Base curb weight: A car’s weight with nothing but standard equipment and a full tank of gas.
  • Dimension: A car’s interior and exterior measurements. They may not mean much out of context, but compare them to those of a car you’re more familiar with to get a sense of the car.
  • Drivetrain: How the engine sends power to the wheels to move the car. The M5 can switch between all-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive.
  • Engine displacement
: The space an engine’s cylinders occupy. More powerful engines tend to have more of this.
  • Horsepower: How an engine’s power is measured. One horsepower equals the power needed to raise 550 pounds by one foot in one second.
  • Torque: How an engine’s turning power is measured. More torque means faster acceleration and in the case of off-road vehicles, more power for crawling over obstacles at low speeds.
  • Turning diameter: The space needed for a car to do a full U-turn.
