background
After the previous Human Resources chief announced their retirement,
GM
was able to land a pretty great new hire: An executive from the self-driving company, Cruise. Arden Hoffman will be joining GM in the last quarter of the year.
We explore Hoffman’s previous work at Cruise, and why she’ll be a great fit for GM.

Arden Hoffman is leaving Cruise for GM

Automotive News
explains that Hoffman has some big shoes to fill at GM. The previous HR chief, Kim Brycz, had been with GM for nearly 40 years and was HR chief since 2018.
Still, GM is looking forward to Hoffman’s arrival, with CEO Mary Barra stating that Hoffman’s “deep background leading the HR function for fast-growing global tech companies makes her the right leader to continue that momentum and deliver our future talent portfolio."
She may be up to the task, but what sort of challenges are waiting for Hoffman when she arrives at GM?

Hoffman will have to wrangle new workplace policies at GM

GM’s new HR chief certainly has her work cut out for her, as GM has faced backlash from employees over the decision to revise their work-from-home policy. In September of 2022,
Automotive News
reported that GM informed employees they would be expected to report to an office at least three days a week starting later that year.
But four days later, an update went explaining that no changes would happen until at least 2023. GM isn’t the only car company coming under fire for forcing employees back into the office, as Tesla’s own Elon Musk has received plenty of criticism for cracking the whip on Tesla workers, too.

Why is Hoffman leaving Cruise?

Hoffman probably found it easy to accept a role at GM after working at Cruise because GM owns Cruise, unbeknownst to many.
GM’s CEO also praised Hoffman for creating a “high-performance culture where Cruisers can do their best work."
Hoffman has a high-profile resume as well, having worked as the Vice President of people at Dropbox, where, with her assistance, the company transformed from a private startup to a publicly traded company. Hoffman has also worked in roles at Google and Goldman Sachs.
