So, is Esurance a good insurance company?

Overall, yes.
In our analysis of hundreds of Esurance reviews, we found that 67% were overwhelmingly positive, while only 10% were negative.
In comparison with the national average of 64% positive reviews to 18.54% negative reviews, Esurance is doing well, although they could do more to win over customers on the fence.
The good: Esurance policyholders found buying and renewing their car insurance policies quite straightforward.
  • Competitive prices
  • Convenient app
On the other hand: While it doesn’t do awfully in any one category, there’s nothing special about Esurance’s claims, customer service, and costs, which are all average.
Our survey asked policyholders about Esurance's cost, customer service, claims process, purchase, renewal, and overall satisfaction.
Here are Esurance's ratings compared to the national average of all the companies featured in our survey:

Esurance launched in 1999 as a lightweight, purely online car insurance company. It’s backed by Allstate, the country's fourth-largest car insurance company, but only employs 2,000 people in
San Francisco
.
Of course, it wouldn’t be fair to compare Esurance to its parent company or other industry titans. That’s why we divided all the auto insurance providers in our survey by size. Here’s how Esurance performs in the context of its peers:

Is Esurance the right insurance company for you?

Esurance is a great pick for:
  • Drivers who like Allstate but want lower rates
  • Tech-savvy customers who prefer to manage things electronically
Keep in mind: Esurance’s lack of customer service and coverage options might not endear it to drivers who prefer a one-stop shop for all their property.
Esurance’s online-only business model makes its plans competitive and easy to buy. It operates in 48 states, including
Texas
,
Florida
, and the company’s home state of
California
.
The company’s slim list of products includes:
  • Auto insurance
  • Homeowners insurance
  • Motorcycle insurance
  • Renters insurance

Will Esurance raise your rates?

At Esurance (and every other car insurance provider), you’re likely to pay a little more every time your
car insurance renews
.
However, there are several cases where your rates may jump more significantly:
  • The inflation rate rises
  • You add a new driver to your policy
  • You add a new vehicle to your policy
  • You change your address
  • You’re involved in a car accident
  • You receive a traffic ticket
Esurance's renewal process scored 4.2 out of 5.0, its highest score in any one category.

Does Esurance resolve claims fast?

Esurance’s virtual appraisal and online claims process simplifies the filing process, but its adjusters weren’t very communicative.
Consumers found Esurance's claims process to be decent, rating it 3.4/5 for efficiency and overall satisfaction. However, the average rate of claims satisfaction for every company we surveyed is 3.54, putting Esurance in the bottom half of the roster.

Customers expect a swift and fair resolution once they
file a car insurance claim
with their provider. Ideally, the adjuster should be in touch throughout the process and communicate the terms and limits of the customer’s auto insurance policy—and their decision—clearly and transparently. Esurance has a little work to do in this area.

state’s insurance requirements
, and you can find the most common
types of car insurance
