Do you need a smog check in Illinois?

I’m moving to Illinois for a job, and I’m excited about the prospect! However, I have an older-model vehicle, and I’m not sure it will pass an emissions test. Does Illinois require cars to have a smog check?

Only the 10 most populous counties in Illinois require a smog check, and are mostly located around Chicago and across the river from St. Louis, Missouri. These checks are required every two years to renew your registration. If you’re moving to one of these counties, you need a smog check in Illinois:
  • Cook County
  • Dupage County
  • Lake County
  • Kane County
  • Kendall County
  • McHenry County
  • Madison County
  • Monroe County
  • St. Clair County
  • Will County
Getting the test is easy—just head to an approved Illinois State testing facility. It should only take a few minutes, although you may wait in line for quite some time unless you have an appointment.
