How to check your Mitsubishi’s VIN

Your Mitsubishi’s VIN is its vehicle identification number. It contains a unique set of 17 digits that identifies your specific Mitsubishi.
There are different places you can find your Mitsubishi VIN. They include:
  • Your insurance and registration cards
  • On the driver’s side of your dashboard, visible through the windshield
  • Inside the driver’s side doorjamb
It’s also possible to find your Mitsubishi VIN on the vehicle’s firewall or rear trunk area.

How to decode a Mitsubishi VIN

The DMV uses VINs to help process many different car-related services—but what exactly is encoded in those 17 digits?
VINs have been used in the United States since the 1950s but weren’t standardized by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) until 1981. Ever since each of those 17 digits has held universally recognized meanings.
VINs use all ten numerical digits (0-9) and all the alphabet letters. The exception is the letters I, O, and Q, as they can easily be confused with 1, 0, and 9.

First position: country of origin

The first three digits of your Mitsubishi VIN make up the world manufacturer identifier (WMI) code. The first number indicates the country where your Mitsubishi was manufactured. For Mitsubishis, you might see an M for Thailand or a J for Japan.

Positions 2-3: manufacturer information

The second digit identifies the manufacturer or A for Mitsubishi. The third digit refers to the vehicle type–i.e., a 3 for a passenger car or a 4 for a multi-purpose vehicle.

Positions 4-8: vehicle-specific information

The next five digits list vehicle-specific information, ranging from your car’s body type to engine and transmission specifications. Because each Mitsubishi model comes in different styles and trim levels, these digits help to identify which exact vehicle you’re driving.

Position 9: the VIN check digit

With so much standardized information making up a VIN, there needs to be a check digit to prevent people from creating fake VINs. This check digit is based on the other digits in your VIN and verifies the authenticity of the number.

Position 10: model year

With every passing year, the system for indicating model year gets increasingly complicated as VINs re-use digits from earlier model years. The only digits that don’t appear here are U, Z, and 0 (in addition to I, O, and Q).
Here’s how the VIN model year codes for the last twenty years break down:

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
