The average American driver saw car insurance premiums jump 14% in 2022, the biggest increase on record in data going back to 1985. More increases are likely in 2023 as insurance companies try to keep up with soaring prices of everything from vehicle parts to maintenance and repair services.

While overall prices for used cars tumbled in the fourth quarter of 2022, lightly used 2022 models of five of the 10 best-selling vehicles in the U.S. are still worth more than the manufacturers’ suggested retail price (MSRP) on comparable new 2023 models.

The disruptions in the used car market will likely reverberate for years to come, as 1- to 3-year-old used vehicles, particularly those models most in demand, remain in short supply.
