or electrical issue are lower—but if you do encounter one, the first thing you should try is resetting the climate control system.

Chevy Express climate control reset instructions

Your malfunctioning climate control system may be caused by a variety of issues, but most of the time a simple system reset will sort things out. Here’s how to do it:
Step 1: Start the car and turn the setting to auto. Start your Chevy’s engine and let it run for a few minutes. If the AC has an “auto” setting (it may not, depending on your trim level), set the AC to the auto setting. Then, shut the engine off again.
Step 2: Locate the fuse box and remove the HVAC fuse. In a Chevy, the fuse box is going to be located under the hood, in front of the driver’s seat. Remove the cover and identify the HVAC fuse—it’s a red 10-volt fuse. Remove it and wait at least 60 seconds. Then, reinsert the fuse (it’s a good idea to replace it with a new one if possible).
Step 3: Start the engine. After replacing the fuse, start the engine and allow it to run for a few minutes without touching the controls. Then, shut off the engine for 10 seconds and restart it.
After that, the AC system should restart itself, which should resolve any issues that you’re experiencing. If not, you’re probably dealing with a more serious issue, for which you’ll need to do some troubleshooting.

Other reasons your Chevy Express A/C isn’t working

Most of the time, resetting your climate control system will resolve any issues that you’re having. But there are some common problems that it won’t fix.
If you’ve tried resetting the system already and you’re still having issues, then you’re probably dealing with one of the following situations:

Low refrigerant

Most AC issues are caused by low refrigerant—usually because there’s a leak. If there’s not enough refrigerant, the climate control system will not start.
You can easily refill your refrigerant, but you’ll need to seal the leak area to prevent the problem from recurring.

Overcharged refrigerant

If the issue began shortly after you refilled your refrigerant, it may be overcharged. Use a pressure gauge to check the pressure in your refrigerant. If it’s too high, let out some of the refrigerant fluid to reduce pressure.

Clogged cabin air filter

If the air filter in your car needs to be changed—which will happen every 10,000-20,000 miles—then you’ll have serious climate control problems. Change out the filter to resolve the matter.

Dirty condenser or evaporator

Over time, your condenser or evaporator (or both) may become dirty. If the problem gets too bad, your climate control system won’t work properly.
Having them cleaned requires the services of a trained mechanic.

How to diagnose a Chevy Express climate control malfunction

There are quite a few possible problems that could occur with your climate control system. If it’s not one of the issues listed above, then there are only two ways to know for sure what the trouble is—using an OBDII scanner or taking it to a professional mechanic.
An OBDII sensor will give you a trouble code that you can look up to diagnose the exact issue with your car. Alternatively, a qualified mechanic can always diagnose the problem for you—though it’ll cost you at least $100-$120
