Why your 2004 Honda CRV needs a radio code

You might be thinking: why would a radio need a code? That seems a little excessive, doesn’t it? Well, as car radios are one of the most frequently stolen vehicle components, having a radio code acts as a safety measure and theft deterrent. Without the code, even if someone does steal your radio, they won’t be able to use it.
If your 2004 Honda CRV is asking you for a radio code, you’ve probably recently disconnected or replaced your vehicle’s battery. This can be a pain if you don’t even know where to find your radio code, but don’t worry, we’ll help you out.

How to find your 2004 Honda CRV radio code

It should be simple to find your 2004 Honda CRV’s radio code—just hold the radio power button for a few seconds. This will reset your radio and might fix the issue.
However, if it’s still asking for a code, look in your glove box for numbers following something labeled “Anti-Theft Radio Code.” This can be either on the glove compartment or in your owner’s manual. Your radio code should be five numbers long, so anything shorter or longer isn’t going to work.

How to look up a 2004 Honda CRV radio code

If those steps don’t work, you might have to do a couple of extra steps. You’ll need to find your
vehicle identification number (VIN)
and the radio serial number to get the code
You can find your VIN on your insurance or registration documents or even on the door next to the driver’s seat or dashboard.
Look for your serial number by clicking and holding down the radio preset buttons 1 and 6 at the same time. While you’re holding them down, use your key to turn the ignition on. Don’t worry, this won’t start your car—it’ll just turn on its electrical components. Wait a few seconds, and you should see a 10-digit serial number appear. It can be helpful to have an assistant for this step!
Once you have your VIN and your serial number, you can find your 2004 Honda CRV’s radio code by:
  • Using Honda’s
    online lookup tool
  • Calling 1-800-999-1009
