Florida classic car insurance requires vehicles 30 years old and older to be insured with property damage liability and personal injury protection.
If you own a classic or collectible vehicle, you know that maintaining one requires extra work—and that your insurance should go above and beyond to protect your cherished car. Insurance providers recognize the difference between normal and classic cars and offer separate insurance for each.
Your classic car doesn’t get driven as often, replacement parts may be harder to find, and it’s probably worth more than your average vehicle, making specialty coverage a must.

What is classic car insurance?

Classic car insurance provides many of the same coverages as a regular auto insurance policy, but tailored to the needs of vintage vehicles. Often, these policies come with special requirements, like mileage caps or stipulations that the car not be modified or modernized.

What is a classic or antique car?

A classic car is a 10-to-24-year-old vehicle with decided historical interest, like a hot rod or muscle car.
An antique car is a classic car that is 25 years old (based on the model year) or older.
These distinctions primarily exist for insurance classification purposes.

What makes classic car insurance different?

You can expect classic car insurance to be less expensive than regular auto insurance. This accounts for the fact that you’ll be driving your classic car a lot less, even in a state like Florida with mild winters.
In fact, most classic car policies include a limited use provision (or mileage cap): you can only use the vehicle for infrequent pleasure driving and shows, exhibitions, club activities, parades, and the like if you want protection.
The insurer will also request your car to be stored securely indoors and restored to/maintained in its original condition (or undergoing restoration).
Depending on your car’s needs, these policies are often quite customizable. The first step to purchasing your custom policy is to negotiate with the insurer to agree upon a value for the car. (There is no set “book value” for specific classic makes and models.) That’s the amount that will be protected.

Florida classic car insurance

Typically, cars must be 30 years old or older to receive antique/historical designation in the Sunshine State. You must apply for a special title and license. In Florida, the minimum coverage required for a classic car is as follows:
Since property damage liability only covers damages to other drivers, it is recommended that you purchase coverage beyond these minimums to protect your vehicle from damage.
Depending on the age of your vehicle, you will have to apply for one of several special license plates:
  • Private-use vehicles made before or during 1945 can receive an ancient motor vehicle plate after paying a license tax. The vehicle must have the original engine or an engine with identical specifications.
  • Vehicles over 30 years old can receive an antique motor vehicle plate after paying a license tax. The vehicle owner may request a regular Florida license plate if they wish.
  • Vehicles from model year 1974 and earlier can apply to the DMV for a historical Florida license plate, or personalized prestige license plate, with original design from the model year.
  • Vehicles that received a permanent license plate before 10/01/99 can keep the plate as long the owner remains the same.
  • Vehicles that received a collectible license plate before 10/01/99 can keep the plate until its next scheduled replacement.
  • Former military vehicles, like trailers, do not need a special license plate only if adding the plate would remove original military markings (contact the DMV with questions).

What impacts the cost of classic car insurance in Florida?

Classic car insurance is usually cheaper than insurance for your regular car. Still, the coverage options you choose can change your monthly rates.
Other factors that can impact your classic car insurance rate include:
  • Model year
  • Stated or guaranteed value
  • Mileage
  • Customization—if you include things like flatbed towing, roadside assistance, spare parts coverage, etc.
  • Your driving record

Benefits of classic car insurance

Provided that you use your historic car for the limited functions insurers require, classic car insurance is the best way to protect your classic or antique vehicle against damage or loss.
Some cars might be eligible for specialized classic car insurance (different from your normal customizable policy) if their current value exceeds their original selling price, making them collectibles.
Here are some of the benefits of getting classic car insurance:
  • Rates 40% to 70% lower than standard car insurance
  • Higher coverage limits (often up to $500,000)
  • Flexible annual mileage limits
  • Claims handling from fellow car enthusiasts
  • Flexible deductible options
  • Guaranteed or agreed value coverage
  • Optional coverage for spare parts and memorabilia
  • Roadside assistance using only flatbed tow trucks
  • Discounts for additional security features (like alarms, VIN etching, and GPS tracking)
  • Potential discounts on approved collector car club memberships
