background
Tesla
has been the undisputed king of electric vehicles (EVs) so far. Its cars have shown the public how powerful and stylish electric vehicles can be, helping EVs gain popularity.
Hoping to get in on the EV boom, major
manufacturers like Kia released electric vehicles
of their own. The EV market is not just dominated by big-name brands, some newer names are making themselves known.
One less common name entering the EV race is Polestar. This Swedish brand was launched in 1996, but they are currently making headlines for its switch to electric vehicles. According to
The Drive
, the Polestar 2 EV serves as a worthwhile competitor to Tesla.
What do you get if you don’t want a Tesla? A Polestar 2, because you dare to be different.

Range and packages of the single-motor Polestar 2

2022 is not the first model year for the all-electric Polestar 2, but it is the first year that Polestar has offered a single-motor version of the vehicle. This is an important step for the manufacturer because it will make the Polestar 2 more affordable and more comparable to the Tesla Model 3.
The single-motor Polestar 2 uses a 78-kWh motor, which is the same motor found in the two motor model. This gives the Polestar 2 an impressive range of 265 miles per charge.
Polestar also offers optional packages to give additional features to the cars, such as the "Plus Package" which includes an enhanced speaker system and a new heat pump. Electric vehicles use their battery for heat, which can negatively impact range, so this can help with that.

What does the Polestar 2 have that a Tesla doesn’t?

Polestar is easily showing that they could be the next direct competitor of Tesla, especially when you’re looking at their dual-motor model.
The single-motor Polestar 2 can be a cost-saving option for those interested in the electric vehicle, and the dual-motor model brings increased power. This model offers 408 horsepower and can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds.
As with the single-motor Polestar 2, buyers can purchase additional packages to make the vehicle suit their interests. The "Performance Package" adds features like adjustable dampers to make the EV into even more of a sports car.
Range is the factor that many are most concerned about when considering an EV, and the 2022 Polestar 2 shows how that technology is improving. The 2022 dual-motor Polestar 2 has a maximum range that is 16 miles higher than that of the 2021 model.

In terms of range, the single-motor Polestar 2's maximum 265 miles per charge is a slight improvement over Tesla. The Tesla Model 3, which is the Tesla model that most directly compares to the Polestar 2, can go two fewer miles on a charge.
While Polestar has improved their range technology to compete with the EV industry leader, the Polestar 2 cannot compete in affordability just yet. A base Tesla Model 3 costs $41,190. A Polestar 2 costs $47,200.
If you are interested in an EV but are concerned by either of these prices, there is a way to make this more manageable. There is currently a $7,500
federal tax credit, in short supply
, for purchasing an electric vehicle or a hybrid, there could also be potential EV credits in your state.
With their updated Polestar 2, the manufacturer is trying to compete with Tesla's successful Model 3. With a competitive range and plenty of package options, they may succeed.
The dual-motor Polestar 2 will reach consumers in October of this year, and the single-motor model coming soon after.
Technology is improving not only making electric vehicles more prominent but changing how we buy car insurance.
