Best car insurance companies in Colorado Springs

No single provider has the best car insurance quotes for every motorist—drivers’ profiles come in all shapes and sizes, and so do their insurance rates.

State Farm, Progressive, USAA, and GEICO hold the biggest market shares in Colorado, but Jerry conducted one of the largest insurance surveys in the nation to learn more about what companies truly stand out in Colorado.

We discovered that insurance providers like Travelers, Clearcover, and Dairyland in Colorado Springs ranked well for both affordability and customer satisfaction. Have a look at how Jerry users rated various providers on a scale of 0 to 5.

Insurance companyMonthly minimum coverage costMonthly full coverage costCost ratingOverall Jerry rating
Clearcover$48$127N/A4.6

National General$68$1774.74.8
State Auto$69$3054.34.4

How’d we get these scores?

Jerry’s experts conducted one of the largest car insurance surveys in the United States. We surveyed 15,000 policyholders, in all 50 states, over the span of 18 months. These policyholders hold insurance policies with 87 different insurance companies. We surveyed policyholders to gauge their satisfaction with their insurance carriers in: policy cost, customer service, buying and renewal experience, as well as claim experience. These scores were all reported by real customers of the insurance companies.

Cheapest car insurance quotes in Colorado Springs

In Colorado Springs, the average driver pays $80 per month for state minimum liability coverage and $223 per month for full coverage insurance. Car insurance in Colorado Springs is about 26% more expensive than the state average.

State minimum$80$60$77
Full coverage$223$181$165

However, rates are highly personalized. Each driver comes with their own unique profile, meaning quotes can vastly differ—even if you’re in the same city. That’s why Colorado drivers turn to Jerry, an insurance broker that helps drivers compare and purchase affordable car insurance in minutes.

Best cheap car insurance quotes in Colorado Springs

Before you get behind the wheel in Colorado, all drivers must carry the bare minimum insurance set by the state. While state minimum coverage is cheaper, you may find that it could leave you vulnerable down the road.

Cheap minimum liability insurance quotes in Colorado Springs

All Colorado drivers must carry the state mandated insurance requirements. This includes at least $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident1, and $15,000 property damage liability coverage—more commonly referred to as 25/50/15 coverage.

There are trusted auto insurance companies you can turn to in the city for affordable coverage.

Do you need more than minimum coverage in Colorado Springs?

State minimum liability insurance is cheaper up front, but could wind up costing you more down the line.

If you get into an at-fault accident resulting in medical bills, repairs, or vehicle replacement, your coverage might not be enough. A totaled vehicle in Colorado could cost well over $50,000 to replace, and medical bills can quickly surpass your $25,000 limit in a serious accident.

Additionally, drivers can file personal injury lawsuits up to three years after an accident under Colorado car accident laws—meaning you could pay years after a crash.

For a more secure policy, consider upgrading your liability coverage limits to 50/100/50 or even 100/300/100 liability coverage. For even more protection, consider opting for full coverage.

Expert Insight

“A general rule that I recommend is to carry enough coverage to protect your current and future assets – at least $100,000/$300,000 of liability coverage is recommended, but you may need more coverage depending on your financial situation.”

Cheap full coverage car insurance quotes in Colorado Springs

If you truly want to protect yourself and your wallet, you’ll need to purchase full coverage car insurance.

On top of your liability coverage, full coverage insurance includes:

  • Comprehensive coverage, which pays for vehicle repair or replacement if it’s been damaged outside of a collision, such as a natural disaster, vandalism, or theft.
  • Collision coverage, which pays for vehicle repair or replacement after a collision with another vehicle or a stationary object.

Full coverage isn’t required by law, but drivers with a car loan will typically be required by their lender to purchase full coverage insurance.

Of course, knowing where to turn for affordable full coverage policies is just as important as having one.

Average cost of car insurance in Colorado Springs

The average driver in Colorado Springs pays $80 per month, or $956 per year, for state minimum liability coverage. For full coverage, drivers pay an average of $223 per month or $2,676 per year.

These costs are higher than both the state and national averages—and there are a few reasons as to why.

  • Population: Colorado Springs has the second highest population of all cities in the state, totaling over 486,000 people.2 More people in a city means a greater chance for accidents, theft, and road congestion—all factors providers consider when determining your rates.
  • Severe weather: Severe weather in Colorado Springs can include tornadoes, flash flooding, and heavy snow—with the average recorded snowfall in the city tipping 57 inches per year! This type of weather increases the chance of an accident or vehicle damage, which can also increase your insurance.34
  • Mountain roads: Driving through the mountains is notoriously difficult, not to mention tough on your car. There are lots of mountain roads around Colorado Springs, which could put inexperienced drivers at higher risk of an accident.
  • Wildlife encounters: The state reports an average of 3,300 wildlife hits each year. So while Colorado Springs is an urban area, the surrounding mountains and forest area house plenty of creatures that could cause serious damages to your vehicle.5

Remember, though, insurance companies look at much more than just your general location when calculating premiums. Your driving record, age, and even credit score can have a big impact on the final price of your policy.

Car insurance quotes in Colorado Springs by rating factors

Companies use different rating factors to determine your car insurance coverage rates. Some of the most common ones include:

  • Your driving history and claims history: If a provider sees accidents, tickets, or other violations on your driving record, you could face higher premiums.
  • Your age: Drivers under 25 and over 70 have some of the highest average rates over other age groups.
  • Your parking spot: If you regularly park your car in a neighborhood prone to theft, car accidents, or similar issues, your insurance company will usually raise your rate.
  • Your vehicle: Luxury, sport, and high-performance vehicles are more expensive to insure.
  • How you use your car: If you drive your vehicle a lot, the resulting higher annual mileage could raise your rates.

How to lower car insurance costs in Colorado Springs

1. Shop around and compare quotes

Sticking with the same policy long-term isn’t always the most practical. Insurance companies determine premiums using a variety of factors, and those factors change rapidly.

To be sure that you’re getting the best rates, experts recommend shopping for a new rate every six months to see if you can find a better deal. That’s where Jerry comes in. We can collect quotes from our pool of top providers to help you find the most affordable price for the coverage you need— all in under a minute.

2. Hunt for car insurance discounts

Most insurers have a set of discounts available to customers, but they may not be advertised to you. To find out if you could save on your current policy, ask your provider about these commonly available discounts:

  • Telematics discounts: By using telematics to track your driving habits, you may qualify for savings from your provider. Some companies even offer a discount for enrolling.
  • Good driver discounts: Some providers offer discounts between 10-30% to drivers without a history of tickets or accidents.
  • Bundling discounts: Many insurers will give you a better rate if you bundle your home and auto insurance (or auto and renters).
  • Good student discounts: If you’re a full-time student, your insurance company might provide a discount for maintaining a B average or higher.

3. Increase your deductible for comprehensive and collision coverage

When you have full coverage insurance, your deductible plays a huge role in your monthly payment calculations. Increasing your deductible can lower your rates, but be sure that you can afford to pay your deductible out-of-pocket in the event of an accident!
