Cheapest car insurance companies in New Hampshire

Jerry wants to empower drivers to make informed decisions throughout the auto insurance shopping process, which is why we conducted an extensive insurance shopping survey—the largest of its kind in the entire nation.

The results? There’s no single “best” or “cheapest” car insurance company for everyone. Instead, individual insurance rates depend on a variety of factors, and the best company for you is incredibly individualized.

For example, while many NH drivers praise The General for their great low rates, others are dissatisfied with the company’s coverage options. Generally, you can expect The General, National General, Farmers, State Farm, Nationwide, and Allstate to offer some of the lowest rates on car insurance in the state of New Hampshire. How’d we get these scores?

Jerry’s experts conducted one of the largest car insurance surveys in the United States. We surveyed 15,000 policyholders, in all 50 states, over the span of 18 months. These policyholders hold insurance policies with 87 different insurance companies. We surveyed policyholders to gauge their satisfaction with their insurance carriers in: policy cost, customer service, buying and renewal experience, as well as claim experience. These scores were all reported by real customers of the insurance companies.

If comparing quotes from multiple insurance companies sounds daunting, don’t worry! You can just use a reliable car insurance comparison app or website like Jerry.

Jerry is a respected insurance agency with a user-friendly app for auto-owners to quickly gather free quotes and explore various options for their auto insurance coverage.

Jerry also offers end-to-end support throughout the entire process, from helping you register for a new policy to assisting with the cancellation of your old one.

Minimum liability and full coverage

Unlike most U.S. states, New Hampshire does not require its drivers to carry a specific amount of liability coverage unless they’ve been convicted of certain driving offenses. But that doesn’t mean you don’t need it.

Cheapest minimum liability coverage car insurance quotes in New Hampshire

New Hampshire insurance laws require drivers convicted of the following violations to carry minimum liability coverage:

  • Hit and run
  • DUI (drugs or alcohol)
  • Intentionally killing or hurting someone with your car
  • Second speeding ticket
  • Second warning or ticket for another traffic violation

If you’ve been convicted of one of the above offenses, or you choose to use liability coverage as proof of financial responsibility, the minimum car insurance requirements in the Granite State include $25,000 in bodily injury coverage per person, $50,000 in bodily injury coverage for an accident involving multiple people, and $25,000 in property damage coverage. This is often referred to as the 25/50/25 rule.

Do you need more than minimum coverage in New Hampshire?

Legally speaking, no—but it’s very likely a good idea to invest in liability insurance that offers more coverage than what’s minimally required by law or to prove financial responsibility.

If you are in an at-fault accident, you could wind up paying out of pocket for medical bills and vehicle repairs that cost far more than the 25/50/25 coverage limits, particularly if the car is totaled or the motorist is seriously harmed. That’s why investing in additional coverage offers better protection.

The bottom line: We recommend investing in 100/300/100 liability coverage for more comprehensive protection—even if you choose to forego full coverage.

Cheapest full coverage car insurance quotes in New Hampshire

Liability insurance covers damage to other vehicles and motorists in an at-fault accident—but what if your vehicle needs repairs? That’s where full coverage car insurance—an optional but important add-on—comes in.

Full coverage includes comprehensive and collision coverage. Collision coverage will pay to repair or replace your vehicle if it’s been damaged in an accident. Comprehensive coverage offers coverage for damages caused by non-collision events, like vandalism, environmental factors, and even theft.

Keep in mind that your auto loan provider will likely require you to purchase full coverage before funding your vehicle sale, and maintain full coverage until your loan is paid off. Below you’ll find a list of samples of affordable full coverage policies that Jerry users secured.

Average rates for state minimum liability coverage and full coverage

Car insurance in New Hampshire costs an annual average of $1,677 for full coverage and $1,558 for minimum coverage. That equals about $136 per month for a full coverage policy, or $130 a month for basic liability.

While the average insurance rates can help you predict how much you’ll be spending, it’s important to remember that your individual premiums will be influenced by a variety of factors, such as:

  • Vehicle type
  • Driving record
  • Claims history
  • Demographic information
  • Credit score

Thus, what you’ll actually pay could be very different from the average numbers listed above.

New Hampshire car insurance: Additional coverages

On top of collision and comprehensive coverage, you may wish to consider some additional forms of optional insurance, such as:

  • Medical payments (MedPay)
  • Personal injury protection (PIP)
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist
  • Towing and labor coverage
  • Rental reimbursement coverage

If you’ve recently taken out a loan to buy a new car, we recommend gap insurance, which provides coverage in situations where the remaining loan balance exceeds the actual cash value of the vehicle. Remember that your car depreciates as soon as you drive it off the lot, and this coverage ensures financial protection in the event it’s totaled in an accident or stolen.

If you’re not a car owner, but you frequently rent or borrow, non-owner car insurance is likely a good idea. This type of coverage is generally cheaper than traditional insurance and is a policy for bodily injury liability and property damage liability, which protects you in the event of an at-fault accident.

Car insurance premium by rating factors

Some factors that can influence your New Hampshire insurance rates include:

  • Driving record: A history of accidents and traffic violations make you a more at-risk driver, causing insurance providers to charge you higher rates.
  • Geographic location: Rates tend to be higher for drivers living in or around major cities, like Manchester, Nashua, and Concord, compared to those living in more rural areas. Even different zip codes within the same metropolitan area can have varying insurance rates.
  • Vehicle type: Your luxury car, sports car, or high-performance vehicle costs a pretty penny to repair or replace, and this is reflected in the cost of your car insurance. More affordable vehicles will be inherently cheaper to insure.
  • Usage: If you put a lot of miles on your vehicle, or use it to rideshare, you might get charged higher premiums than someone who uses their vehicle strictly for leisure purposes.
  • Credit score: A good credit score is often associated with lower insurance premiums, as it is considered an indication of financial responsibility.

Each auto insurance provider will use their own algorithm—which considers the above factors and more to varying degrees—to determine your unique rates. To get an accurate quote, contact insurance companies directly, or utilize an online or mobile comparison tool.

Cheapest New Hampshire car Insurance after a driving violation

Your rates will likely go up after a driving violation—especially if they become habitual—because you’ll be considered a high-risk driver.

Cheapest car insurance for New Hampshire drivers with a speeding ticket

Often, the severity of your speeding ticket matters. Most states break speeding violations down into various levels based on how far over the limit you were traveling, such as:

  • 1-5 MPH over
  • 6-10 MPH over
  • 11-15 MPH over
  • 16-20 MPH over
  • 21 MPH or more over

Getting a more severe speeding ticket will likely result in significant insurance premium increase—but even minor moving violations can cause your rates to go up.

If your annual rate recently increased after a speeding ticket, use Jerry to shop around for a new policy and keep your costs as low as possible.

Cheapest auto insurance in New Hampshire after a DUI

Reasonably so, New Hampshire takes DUI violations very seriously, and they generally lead to a substantial increase in car insurance rates. Your insurance company may drop your policy altogether.

Jerry helps drivers with a history of DUI find the cheapest policy out there, so you can get back on the road at an affordable price.

New Hamshire SR-22 insurance

New Hampshire requires SR-22 insurance for at least three years after a major driving incident, such as a DUI. Proof of said insurance will need to be submitted to the DMV to verify proper coverage before getting back on the road.

Obviously, whatever violation or incident lead you to needing an SR-22 certificate makes you a high-risk driver, which means your insurance rates will likely be higher.

Cheapest New Hampshire auto Insurance after an at-fault accident

Accidents happen—but if you were at fault, then your insurance provider was forced to financially cover the costs related to damages and injuries. That’s why your claims history significantly affects your future car insurance rates.

FAQ

Cheapest New Hampshire auto insurance based on insurance history

Believe it or not, your history of car insurance coverage significantly affects your future rates. That’s right—a lapse in coverage typically leads to higher costs down the line.

To help make sure your insurance never lapses, Jerry sends payment reminders to eligible customers when a payment is approaching or you’ve fallen behind.

We’ve also successfully assisted countless drivers whose coverage lapsed in finding a new policy that was still affordable.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with poor credit

Even though your credit score doesn’t indicate whether or not you’re an at-risk driver, New Hampshire residents with lower credit scores typically pay higher premiums than their counterparts with higher FICA ratings. This is because auto insurance companies have found a relationship between low credit scores and an increased frequency of filed claims by drivers.

We’ve found that the national average car insurance premium for individuals in the highest credit bracket (750+) is approximately 20% lower than the average cost for individuals with less impressive scores (under 550).

Cheapest New Hampshire car insurance by age

Young drivers and those with a provisional driver’s license are relatively inexperienced, which explains why they tend to get charged higher rates than older adults. In general, you won’t see your rates decrease significantly until you turn 25. Then, after the age of 75, your rates will begin to increase again.

Cheapest New Hampshire car insurance for young drivers

Teenaged New Hampshire drivers (aged 16-19) typically pay the highest insurance rates compared to any other age group.

If you’re a teen driver who owns a newer vehicle, we recommend opting for full coverage car insurance. Though it costs more, teens are at an increased likelihood of being involved in major accidents, and full coverage car insurance will provide you with the protection you need.

Cheapest New Hampshire car insurance for senior drivers

Though adults pay less than teens for auto coverage, seniors 75+ tend to see their rates start to rise again. This is because older drivers have a proven heightened susceptibility to accidents and are more likely to sustain severe injuries in the event of a collision.

As we’ve mentioned, your choice of vehicle will deeply impact your car insurance rates, with luxury and sports cars costing far more than affordable economy vehicles.

Popular makes and models for New Hampshire drivers looking to save on insurance include:

  • Honda Civic
  • Nissan Rogue
  • Ford Bronco
  • Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Car insurance cost for new vs. old car

Your vehicle’s make and model isn’t the only thing that matters—it’s age does, too. The cost of insuring a newer car is generally more expensive than that of an older car.

According to data, the average annual cost of full coverage insurance for a car that is 10+ years old in New Hampshire is an estimated 22% less than the cost of insuring a vehicle that is 4 years old or newer.

New Hampshire cheapest car insurance by location

Your geographic location—and the specific spot you keep your vehicle—will also affect your rates. That’s right! Insurance costs will vary depending on population density, accident rates, crime statistics, weather conditions, and more. For this reason, insurance premiums can even differ among different zip codes in the same region.

Why car insurance is so expensive in New Hampshire

If you think your New Hampshire car insurance rates seem high, it could be because of where you live. NH drivers may be subject to:

  • High population density cities: If you live in a densely populated area with lots of traffic congestion, you’ll likely pay more for your car insurance premiums.
  • Uninsured drivers: There may be a high amount of uninsured (or underinsured) drivers on the roads, putting you at a more significant financial risk for your insurance providers, leading them to charge you more.
  • Pricey healthcare: High medical expenses means that your insurance provider will have to shell out more money if someone is injured in an accident, and they pass those costs onto you.
  • Rate of car thefts: Regions with an increased incidence of car thefts can lead to steeper insurance costs, as insurers compensate for the higher risk of vehicle loss or damage.
  • High risk of natural disasters: New Hampshire is at risk for flooding and even hurricanes, which both could severely damage your vehicle.

Considering these factors, it is not uncommon for car insurance in New Hampshire to be relatively expensive compared to other regions.
