How much does GMC car insurance cost?

If you favor rough and tough, you can’t go wrong with a GMC. General Motors has been producing some of America’s best-selling trucks for more than a century—and while they may have started basic, the 2023 lineup can get downright luxurious. Getting behind the wheel of a GMC makes sense for those looking for maximum functionality out of their vehicle. But when it comes to maximum savings, you won’t always find them with GMC car insurance.

Insurance rates are based on the kind of vehicle you drive, but factors such as your age, location, driving history, and coverage needs also play into rates. That’s why there’s no such thing as an “average” auto insurance quote. The only way to truly understand how much your car insurance will cost is to compare car insurance quotes for your own driver profile.

How to find the cheapest GMC Car Insurance Quotes

The insurance cost for a GMC vehicle will depend on the specific model, model year, and features, but in general, insurance for GMC trucks and SUVs is about the middle of the road. GMC is known for producing reliable and durable vehicles with ample safety features, which can help to lower insurance costs—but the driver profile also influences how much you’ll pay.

But here to help you is Jerry Insurance Agency—the nation’s leading online insurance broker that compares insurance quotes from 50+ top providers in seconds to find the best rate for your GMC. It’s quick, simple, and hassle-free—no phone calls, emails, or sales pitches.

Check out some actual GMC car insurance quotes found by Jerry.

Best car insurance companies for GMC drivers

Shopping for auto insurance can be overwhelming. With dozens of insurance providers to choose from and rates that span in price, how do you know what’s right? Finding one right for you and your vehicle is important.

But there’s a catch—no company will offer every GMC driver the cheapest rate. Car insurance rates are influenced by the car you drive and personal factors such as age, driving record, and location. As such, every driver will receive unique quotes from every provider.

At Jerry, we want to make insurance shopping easy, so we conducted the largest car insurance survey in the nation to help GMC drivers find the best insurance prices. We spoke to more than 16,000 policyholders about their insurance providers.

Here’s how GMC drivers rate some of the top insurance companies.

How’d we get these scores?

Jerry’s experts conducted one of the largest car insurance surveys in the United States. We surveyed 15,000 policyholders, in all 50 states, over the span of 18 months. These policyholders hold insurance policies with 87 different insurance companies. We surveyed policyholders to gauge their satisfaction with their insurance carriers in: policy cost, customer service, buying and renewal experience, as well as claim experience. These scores were all reported by real customers of the insurance companies.

Searching for the right car insurance policy can be like searching for a needle in a haystack. That’s because GMC auto insurance rates are based on several factors:

  • Models: Newer or high-end GMC models like the GMC Denali or AT4 are more expensive to purchase and have higher repair and replacement costs—so they are more costly to insure.
  • Popularity: GMC vehicles are all over the road. Popularity can sometimes influence insurance rates, as more popular models are associated with higher theft rates.
  • Vehicle model: Different GMC models have different insurance rates. For example, insurance for the GMC Terrain will likely have lower insurance than a GMC Sierra AT4.
  • Driving history: Driving history of the vehicle’s owner’s driving history significantly impacts insurance rates. A record of at-fault accidents and driving violations tells insurers you’re high risk, which spikes insurance rates.
  • Location: Where you live can also impact insurance premiums. Some areas are subject to higher crime or severe weather conditions, which can lead to higher premiums.
  • Vehicle use: Whether you use your GMC for commercial or leisure purposes can increase or decrease your monthly payments.
  • Safety ratings: Insurance rates are also influenced by vehicle safety features—the safer the vehicle, the less you’ll pay.

Take a look at the table below to see the average cost of auto insurance for some popular GMC models.

CarAverage State Minimum Insurance CostAverage Full Coverage Insurance Cost
GMC Terrain$92$170
GMC Sierra 1500$84$150
GMC Yukon$96$168
GMC Acadia$91$170
GMC Envoy$86$149
GMC New Sierra 1500$82$127
GMC Canyon$89$165

Whether you drive a Terrian, Acadia, or Hummer, you must ensure you have the proper car insurance before you hit the road. That means purchasing minimum coverage insurance that meets your state’s requirements. Minimum coverage is legally required and is generally basic liability insurance—bodily injury liability and property damage liability.

If you’re behind the wheel of a brand-new GMC or high-end model, it may be worthwhile to consider a full-coverage insurance policy that includes collision and comprehensive coverage. In the event of an accident, you’ll have financial protection for your medical expenses and damage to your vehicle.

GMC Sierra 1500 insurance costs

The GMC Sierra is one of the brand’s best-selling vehicles—and one of the best-selling pickup trucks across brands. With a complete redesign and 2019 and a follow-up revision in 2022, the 2023 Sierra is back and better than ever.

The Sierra 1500 is confident and competent, with several trim levels ranging from the base-level Pro to the ultra-luxurious Denali Ultimate. But as the price of the vehicle itself increases, so does insurance.

GMC Sierra 1500 car insurance averages around $1,980 per year for full coverage and $1,068 per year for state minimum coverage.

The trim level of your GMC Sierra will significantly impact how much you pay for car insurance, with higher trim levels fetching higher insurance rates. The 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 comes in eight trim levels—Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, AT4X, Denali, and Denali Ultimate—and three cab configurations—regular, double, and crew cab.

Here’s a breakdown of some of the popular trims:

  • SLE (starting MSRP: $54,495): Available with a four-cylinder, 5.3-liter V8 or diesel engine with 17-inch alloy wheels, LED bed lighting, MultiPro configurable tailgate with power lock/release, a rearview camera with trailer hitch guidelines, remote start, cruise control, keyless entry and ignition, full-color digital gauge cluster, a 13.4-inch touchscreen infotainment display, heated, leather-wrapped tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and heated front seats.
  • Elevation (starting MSRP: $56,395): Adds 20-inch wheels, LED foglights, increased towing capacity, single-speed transfer case (4WD models), and cloth upholstery.
  • SLT (starting MSRP: $57,795): Upgrades with 18-inch wheels, heated and power-folding mirrors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, auto-dimming driver’s side and rearview mirrors, leather upholstery, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
  • AT4 (starting MSRP: $68,595): Available with either the diesel or 6.2-liter V8 engine and adds four-wheel drive, two-speed transfer case, hill descent control, upgraded suspension with monotube shock absorbers and a 2-inch lift, all-terrain tires, skid plates, and adjustable traction control.
  • Denali (starting MSRP: $67,595): Includes all features of the AT4X plus two-speed transfer case (4WD only), adaptive suspension, integrated trailer brake controller, spray-in bedliner, bed-view camera, Bose audio system, 20-inch wheels, side steps, power-sliding rear window, heated second-row seats, ventilated front seats, and wireless charging.

Remember that because the Sierra 1500 is available with multiple engines and trim levels, insurance costs will vary based on your choices. Higher trim levels with larger engines will cost more to insure. And if you’re adding additional features and packages, you can also expect higher insurance rates. Here’s how much you might expect your cost to change based on the trim level of your car:

GMC Terrain insurance costs

Drivers looking for a mid-size SUV with lower maintenance and insurance costs than the Acadia will find the GMC Terrain attractive. Although it may not be a direct competitor with other SUVs in its segment, the Terrain earns decent fuel economy, has several available trim levels, and gets good safety ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS.

Car insurance rates for the GMC Terrain average $1,980 for full coverage and $1,068 for state minimum coverage per year, but rates may change based on the trim level and driver.

Here’s a breakdown of the available trim levels for the 2024 GMC Terrain:

  • SLE (starting MSRP: $31,295): Includes LED exterior lighting, heated mirrors, proximity keyless entry and push-button ignition, auto-dimming rearview mirror, a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen, onboard Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration (with wireless connectivity), a six-speaker sound system, forward collision warning with automatic braking, and lane keeping assistance.
  • SLT (starting MSRP: $35,295): Adds hands-free liftgate, roof rails, remote ignition, dual-zone automatic climate control, an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, leather upholstery, power-adjustable, heated front seats, universal garage door opener, and high-definition rearview camera.
AT4 (starting MSRP: $37,395): Off-road edition, adding underbody skid plate and unique styling cues.
  • Denali (starting MSRP: $39,995): Adds integrated navigation system, Bose premium audio, a wireless charging pad, upgraded driver information display, head-up display, blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and safety alert seat.

All Terrain trim levels are powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine (175 horsepower, 203 lb-ft of torque) paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, so insurance costs won’t increase based on engine size and power. That said, additional features and packages increase the value of your vehicle and can cause insurance rates to rise. Here’s how much you might expect your cost to change based on the trim level of your car:

GMC Acadia insurance costs

The GMC Acadia is one of two three-row SUVs in the lineup that’s spacious, powerful, and versatile. It comes standard with a 228-hp turbocharged four-cylinder or an optional 310-hp V-6 that’s worth the upgrade. All models are well-equipped for comfort and convenience, but the optional upgrades that take the Acadia up a notch can also increase insurance costs.

On average, the GMC Acadia costs $1,980 for full coverage car insurance and about $1,068 for state minimum coverage per year.

Here’s an overview of the cost and features of the 2024 GMC Acadia trim levels:

  • SLE (starting MSRP: $38,195): Includes 18-inch wheels, keyless ignition and entry, tri-zone automatic climate control, 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, six-passenger seating, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration (with wireless connectivity), and a six-speaker sound system.
  • SLT (starting MSRP: $42,495): Adds roof rails, hands-free liftgate, remote start, leather upholstery, heated front seats, navigation system, and an eight-speaker Bose audio system with HD radio.
  • AT4 (starting MSRP: $44,795): Upgrades to a 310-hp V6 engine with special 17-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, standard all-wheel drive with componentry specific to the AT4 for greater traction, hill descent control, hill hold assist, and black exterior trim.
  • Denali (starting MSRP: $49,995): Adds distinctive grille, 20-inch wheels, digital instrument panel, head-up display, ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, and wireless charging pad.

Every trim level of the GMC Acadia comes standard with GMC Pro Safety Plus—automatic emergency braking, front and rear parking sensors, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, and blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert—that can boost driver safety and may help reduce insurance costs. Here’s how much you might expect your cost to change based on the trim level of your car:

GMC Yukon insurance costs

The GMC Yukon (and its XL version) is the biggest and most expensive SUV in the GMC lineup. It’s backed by two powerful engines set on a truck base, making it ideal for towing and hauling. Thanks to a host of standard features and its large size, the Yukon/Yukon XL has a high purchase price and equally high insurance rates.

The GMC Yukon costs around $1,980 for full coverage car insurance and about $1,068 for state minimum coverage per year.

The 2024 GMC Yukon is available in five trim levels:

  • SLE (starting MSRP: $59,295): Includes LED headlights, 18-inch wheels, proximity keyless entry and push-button start, 10.2-inch touchscreen with Google integration, digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration (with wireless connectivity), forward collision mitigation, and lane keeping assist.

  • Denali (starting MSRP: $76,200: Includes AT4 upgrades plus the Technology package, a 14-speaker Bose audio system, and second-row bucket seats.
  • Denali Ultimate (starting MSRP: $96,450): Builds on the Denali with the Denali Premium package, Max Trailering package, a rear-seat entertainment system with dual 12.6-inch display screens, air suspension (RWD models only), massaging front seats, upgraded interior trim and leather upholstery, and an 18-speaker Bose audio system.

Every trim level of the Yukon is available in three engines—a 5.3-liter V8 (355 horsepower, 383 lb-ft of torque), a 6.2-liter V8 (420 hp, 460 lb-ft), and a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel engine (277 hp, 460 lb-ft). Are GMCs more expensive to insure?

The cost to insure a GMC depends on the car—model, model year, vehicle features—as well as the driver’s profile—age, driving history, location, coverage needs, insurance history, and more.

GMCs are generally known for their durability and reliability and aren’t necessarily more expensive to insure than other vehicles, but some GMCs have features that may increase insurance rates.

Newer and more expensive GMC models will have higher insurance costs than older models with fewer features. You’ll also pay more if you have higher coverage needs or a bad driving record.

Compared to the average cost of other cars, GMCs cost 10% less to insure.

Cheapest GMCs to insure

If you want to save money on insurance costs, opting for the fully-loaded top-tier models likely won’t do it. The higher the trim level, the more expensive insurance will be. In general, choosing the base-level GMC models without optional packages and features will help to reduce insurance costs.

The cheapest GMC model to insure is the 2016 GMC Yukon, with an average monthly premium of $20 for state minimum coverage and an average of $188 for full coverage.

Most expensive GMCs to insure

GMC vehicles run across the spectrum when it comes to luxury. The base-level GMC Terrain comes with a fraction of the features of the GMC Yukon Denali Limited. The model you choose—and its price, safety ratings, and features—can make a huge difference to your monthly insurance payments.

The most expensive GMC model to insure is the 2021 GMC Terrain, with an average monthly premium of $176 for state minimum coverage and an average of $181 for full coverage.

Remember that while your model and trim level greatly influence car insurance rates, personal factors like age, driving record, insurance and claim history, location, and coverage needs are also important considerations.

So, if you want to save money on car insurance, shopping around and comparing quotes from several providers can help ensure you’re not overpaying.

What factors affect GMC car insurance rates?

Insurers consider many factors when calculating car insurance rates. Here are some factors that tend to affect premiums:

  • Vehicle cost: The more expensive your vehicle is, the more expensive insurance coverage will be—especially if you’re driving a luxury, high-performance, or sports car.
  • Vehicle age: Newer models typically cost more to insure due to newer technology and a higher repair and replacement cost.
  • Vehicle safety features: GMCs have good safety ratings, and newer models equipped with GMC Pro Safety Plus may see lower car insurance rates.
  • Your age: Drivers under 25—especially drivers 16 to 19—pay the highest insurance rates due to limited driving experience. Senior drivers over 70 also pay high rates.
Your driving record and claims history: Auto insurance companies look at your accident record to determine your risk level and typically reward good drivers with lower insurance rates (and discounts!).
  • Credit history: Some insurers use your credit score (FICO score) to determine your risk level as a customer. Drivers with good credit history typically have lower insurance rates.
Coverage: Purchasing minimum coverage is less expensive than a full coverage insurance policy.

Here are some specific factors that impact auto insurance rates for GMCs:

  • Safety features: Most GMC vehicles are equipped with GMC safety features like blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision alert, and more. All of these features help to lower insurance rates for good drivers.
  • Engine: GMC doesn’t produce any high-performance vehicles, but models with larger engines, such as the GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 or the GMC Canyon Denali, may have higher insurance rates due to a higher risk of accidents.

GMC insurance cost for young drivers

Teen drivers under 25—especially those 16 to 19—have some of the highest insurance rates of any age bracket due to limited driving experience and a higher risk of being involved in an accident. After 25, drivers have more experience and should see lower insurance rates.

Although a full coverage car insurance policy may cost more upfront, it can help protect new and teen drivers—especially those with a new vehicle—against the costs associated with accidents.

GMC insurance cost for senior drivers

Seniors over 70 also see high insurance rates. Age increases susceptibility to injury and mortality following a car crash, while slower reflexes also increase the likelihood of being in a car crash. Both of these factors increase insurers’ risk.

But car insurance rates for seniors can still be affordable—and Jerry can help seniors GMC drivers find the coverage they need at the best rate.

GMC insurance cost for drivers with driving violations

Driving violations can quickly increase insurance costs upon renewal, and maintaining a clean driving record is one of the easiest ways to lower car insurance payments.

GMC drivers with a history of at-fault accidents, speeding tickets, and other driving violations are classified as high-risk drivers by insurers, leading to high insurance payments.

Cheapest car insurance for GMC drivers with speeding ticket

Having a single speeding ticket on your record won’t break the bank for insurance, but multiple offenses or a reckless driving charge on your record could. Drivers with a speeding ticket on their record see an increase in insurance rates compared to drivers with a clean record.

GMC drivers with a speeding ticket can still find savings—and Jerry can help!

How can I lower the cost of my GMC car insurance?

GMCs might have lower insurance rates than others, but depending on your vehicle and driving profile, it can still be pricey. Here are some tips to help reduce monthly insurance payments without sacrificing coverage:

  1. Shop around: Insurance rates aren’t consistent between carriers—and some insurers offer different discounts—so shopping around and comparing quotes from at least three providers can help you find the right coverage at the lowest price.
  2. Ask about discounts: Many insurance providers offer various car insurance discounts, such as a safe driver discount, bundling policies, or installing safety features in your GMC. Check with your insurer to see what discounts are available to you.
  3. Choose the right coverage: You’ll need insurance that meets your state’s minimum requirements, but consider your budget when choosing additional coverage. For example, if you have an older GMC, you may not need as much coverage as someone with a brand-new GMC.
  4. Increase your deductible: Your deductible is the amount you’ll pay out of pocket before your insurance kicks in. A higher deductible can reduce your monthly payments, but you’ll need to be sure you can cover your deductible if you’re involved in an accident.
  5. Maintain a clean driving record: Your driving record is a significant factor in calculating your GMC insurance rates. You may qualify for lower rates if you maintain a clean driving record with no accidents or driving violations.
  6. Check insurance rates before you buy: Some GMC models are more expensive to insure than others. When shopping for a car, inquire about insurance rates before you buy.
  7. Bundle your policies: Bundle your auto with home insurance for a discount.
  8. Consider usage-based insurance: Some insurers offer insurance programs that track your driving habits and adjust your monthly payments accordingly. This is a great option if you don’t drive your GMC frequently.
