What is driving left of center?

My driving instructor has repeatedly told me that I should never drive left of center, but I’m not exactly sure what she means. What does driving left of center mean?

Driving left of center is a situation where a motorist drives on the left side of the dividing line on a road with two-way traffic. Depending on the situation, this maneuver may be legal or illegal, but it depends on the circumstances.
If you’re driving on a street where passing is allowed and the center line is dotted, driving left of center to pass another car in your lane is perfectly acceptable.
However, driving left of center in other situations is either illegal or highly dangerous. This includes:
  • Passing in a no-passing zone
  • Going in the left lane to drag race
  • Going in the wrong lane to avoid traffic
  • Crossing into the other lane due to distraction or
    DUI
Because of the dangers of a head-on collision, driving left of center should be avoided unless you feel confident passing and you’re actually in a passing zone.
Now that you know more about driving left of center, you should feel better about answering questions on your driving exam. If you study, pass the driving test, and avoid driving left of center, you should be well on your way to getting your license. And while it’s an exciting time, don’t forget about getting car insurance so you can legally get behind the wheel. The best place to start your search for car insurance is with the
