How long can I drive with expired tags?

I lost my job about a month ago but I need to get new tags for my car. I thought that maybe I could drive my car for a bit with expired tags, but I don’t want to get in trouble. How long can a person drive with expired tags?

Driving with expired tags for any period of time is illegal. This is because driving an unregistered vehicle is illegal, and if your tags are expired, your vehicle is not properly
registered
.
In some cases, you may just get a warning or a small fine, especially if your tags have expired very recently. But after six months in all states, your car may be impounded.
The cost to get your car back after this is often more than the cost of registration. So, at the very worst, you should try to renew your tags within that time frame.
