How do I get a driving license for an H4 visa in Texas?
I’ve got an H4 visa, but I’d like to get a driver’s license in case I need some backup ID. What’s the process for getting a Texas driver’s license with an H4 visa?

Getting a driver’s license is a great idea, not least because you’ll be able to explore all the Lone Star State has to offer!
H4 visa holders in Texas qualify for a driver’s license but must meet additional documentation requirements.
Here’s how to get a driver’s license with an H4 visa in Texas:
- Complete aTexas Driver Application Form (DL-14A)
- Make an appointment at aTexas driver license office
- Present the following documents:
Proof of lawful presence (either an unexpired foreign passport OR Form I-94 Arrival Record)
Proof of Texas residency (such as a utility bill, rental/lease agreement, or homeowners or renters insurance card)
Proof of identity (such as your unexpired passport and H4 visa)
Social Security Number OR a letter from the Social Security Administration (SSA) explaining that you aren’t eligible for an SSN (you can get one of these by bringing your passport, visa, and I-94 form to an SSA office)
- Provide your signature and thumbprints
- Have your picture taken
- Pay the application fee
- Pass the vision test
- Take and pass any required knowledge or driving tests
Keep in mind: You might also have to prove that you completed an Impact Texas Driver (ITD) and adult Driver Education course.
Whew! It’s a lot, but it’s worth it to hit the road in Texas.
