Question: I just got a great deal on a used Hyundai Elantra that has low miles and is in great shape. The only problem is that it didn’t come with an owner’s manual. My immediate issue is that I’m at the gas station, and I’m trying to figure out how to open the door to the gas tank. How do you open a gas tank on a Hyundai Elantra?
Answer:
You can always find a manual for Hyundai Elantras on their website here, but for your convenience, here’s how you can open the gas tank door on a Hyundai Elantra across the past three generations.
You’ll first want to pull on the gas tank door release lever, located on the driver’s side floor, to the far left.
Hyundai Elantra 7th, 6th and 5th generation
The instructions to open the fuel filler door on the fifth-generation (2010-2014), sixth-generation (2015-2019) and seventh-generation (2015-2019) Hyundai Elantras are the same, according to their manuals.
The fuel filler door must be opened from inside the vehicle by pulling up the fuel filler door lever, located to the left of the driver’s seat, on the floor. There are two levers, pull the one with an icon of a gas pump. The other lever opens the hood.
In the manual, Hyundai recommends these steps:
- Turn the engine off.
- Pull up the fuel filler door opener.
- Pull the fuel filler door out to fully open.
- To remove the fuel tank cap, turn it counterclockwise. You may hear a hissing noise as the pressure inside the tank equalizes.
- Place the cap on the fuel filler door.
Gas tank door does not open due to freezing weather
According to Hyundai’s manual, if the fuel filler door does not open because ice has formed around it, tap lightly or push on the door to break the ice and release the door. Do not pry on the door. If necessary, spray around the door with an approved de-icer fluid (do not use radiator antifreeze) or move the vehicle to a warm place and allow the ice to melt.
How many gallons of gas does a Hyundai Elantra hold?
The Elantra’s gas tank capacity is 12.4 gallons. As an economical fuel-efficient car, the Hyundai Elantra stands out with its impressive mileage and affordability, saving $2,000 in fuel costs over five years compared to the average new vehicle, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
They also state that the 2024 Hyundai Elantra 2.0-litre automatic can get 32 city MPG and 41 highway MPG. They estimate you can get 446 miles of total range and that a full tank costs $43 (but obviously that cost will vary depending on gas in your area).
What gas does Hyundai Elantra take?
All Hyundai Elantras use regular unleaded fuel. This is the most cost-effective fuel at the pumps.
