Best car insurance companies for Kia drivers

When shopping for auto insurance, the biggest challenge is finding the right insurance provider for you.

Notice that we didn’t say the cheapest—because there is no single, cheapest insurance company for every driver, no matter what social media tells you. We conducted one of the largest shopping surveys in the nation and found the best insurance company depends on your driving record, address, insurance history, age, and many other factors.

Here’s what Kia owners had to say about the top insurance companies in the country, from Allstate to State Farm.

How’d we get these scores?

Jerry’s experts conducted one of the largest car insurance surveys in the United States. We surveyed 15,000 policyholders, in all 50 states, over the span of 18 months. These policyholders hold insurance policies with 87 different insurance companies. We surveyed policyholders to gauge their satisfaction with their insurance carriers in: policy cost, customer service, buying and renewal experience, as well as claim experience. These scores were all reported by real customers of the insurance companies.

Insurance costs for popular Kia models

By sales, the five most popular Kia car models of 2022 are the Sportage, Forte, Telluride, Sorento, and K5 (formerly the Optima).

But sales figures can’t tell us which of these car models is the cheapest to insure. For that, you’ll have to look at:

  • The availability of car parts: Unique or rare parts, such as supercharged engine components, increase repair and insurance costs.
  • The cost of repairs: Insurance companies offer lower premiums to cars with cheap repair costs because, well, they’re often responsible for paying them.
  • The engine size: Larger engines cost more to repair and so are more expensive to insure.
  • The MSRP: Expensive trims and fancy features cost more to insure because they cost more to repair and replace.
  • The safety rating: The better a vehicle’s crash and safety ratings, the lower your insurance rates.
  • The vehicle size and class: Full-size SUVs and sedans cost more to insure than compact models, but less than sports cars and EVs.

The type of coverage you choose for your car insurance policy also decides your annual premiums.

(Most) state laws require liability insurance, which is often the cheapest to buy, especially if you stick to the minimum coverage limits required. It covers the cost of mending any damages you cause while driving and includes both bodily injury liability and property damage liability insurance.

To cover the cost of repairing or replacing your own car, you’ll need to buy full coverage car insurance. Because you can use it even if you were in an at-fault accident, it tends to cost more. A full coverage policy typically includes collision coverage, which applies to impacts with cars and other objects, and comprehensive coverage, which applies to damages resulting from vandalism, car thefts, and the weather.

Here’s a comparison between the cost of car insurance for a Kia with liability coverage versus full coverage:

CarAverage State Minimum Insurance CostAverage Full Coverage Insurance Cost
Kia Forte$108$197
Kia Optima$105$201
Kia Soul$95$168
Kia Sorento$95$171
Kia Sportage$88$160
Kia Rio$95$190
Kia K5$122$221

Kia Sportage insurance costs

The Kia Sportage crossover may be compact, but it became a sales juggernaut after its redesign. The Sportage stands out in a crowded segment thanks to its roomy interior, large cargo area, and technology. As the car model approaches its 30th birthday, it only seems to be getting better and better.

On average, Kia Sportage insurance costs $88 per month for state minimum coverage and $166 per month for full coverage.

The 2024 Kia Sportage comes with a generous suite of standard driver-assistance technology, including:

  • Driver attention warnings
  • Forward collision mitigation
  • Lane departure warnings
  • Lane-keeping assistance
  • Parking sensors

Higher trims come with valuable enhanced driver aids and quality-of-life features but the engine stays the same: a 2.5L four-cylinder engine.

Here are the highlights of all seven of the 2023 Kia Sportage’s trim levels—click the links to learn more about their insurance costs:

  • The Sportage LX ($26,290) includes LED taillights, LED headlights (with automatic high beams), an 8-inch touchscreen (with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), and six speakers.
  • The Sportage EX ($28,290) adds simulated leather upholstery, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, a remote start function, and dual-zone automatic climate control. On the safety side, you get Safe Exit Assist and blindspot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts.
  • The Sportage X-Line ($31,090) takes all-wheel-drive, a higher ground clearance, a center-locking differential, and roof rails to rugged roads.
  • The Sportage SX ($31,790) builds on the EX with a hands-free liftgate, panoramic sunroof, and premium sound system. Adaptive cruise control, highway driving assistance, and forward collision detection with automatic braking provide great value.
  • The Sportage SX Prestige ($33,790) creates an upscale experience with premium synthetic upholstery, a heated sterling wheel, and ventilated front seats. On the practical side, you also get foglights, parking sensors, blindspot monitors, a surround-view camera system, and automatic low-speed emergency braking.
  • The Sportage X-Pro ($35,290) adds the X-Line’s performance tweaks, the SX’s features, multi-terrain driving modes, all-terrain tires, and foglights.
  • The Sportage X-Pro Prestige ($37,090) combines the X-Pro and SX Prestige equipment for a trim with both power and luxury.

The 2023 Forte includes forward collision mitigation, lane-departure warnings, lane-keeping assistance, and driver attention warnings.

On average, Kia Forte insurance costs $108 per month for state minimum coverage and $197 per month for full coverage.

Kia Telluride insurance costs

The stylish Kia Telluride might be the flashiest ride in the lineup but it doesn’t lack substance. Appearing at the top of both Edmunds and Car & Driver’s Year’s Best lists, the Telluride balances style, comfort, and great features. We expect (and hope) that it’ll stick around for many years.

A 3.8L V6 engine, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive are standard for every 2023 Kia Telluride. Its driver aids include adaptive cruise control, blindspot warnings, forward collision mitigation, and lane-keeping assistance. We expect no less from Kia.

Check out what each trim of the 2024 Kia Telluride includes (and how much insurance costs—just click the links):

  • The Telluride SX ($45,690) luxuriates in dual sunroofs, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 10-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. You also get blindspot cameras, a surround-view camera system, better highway assistance, and enhanced forward collision mitigation.

Kia Sorento insurance costs

The Kia Sorento is one of the few small SUVs with third-row seating and a sensible approach to technology. The standard list includes lane-keeping assistance, blindspot warnings, forward collision warnings, and automatic braking. Two gasoline engines, a hybrid, and a plug-in hybrid powertrain give this little crossover broad appeal.

On average, Kia Sorento’s insurance costs $95 per month for state minimum insurance coverage and $171 per month for full coverage.

The 2024 Kia Sorento has five trim levels. Check out their features (and insurance costs) below:

  • The Sorento LX ($30,090) starts with a 2.5L four-cylinder standard engine, a six-speaker audio system, and an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
  • The Sorento S ($32,590) includes dual-zone climate controls, synthetic leather upholstery, a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, and rear parking sensors.
  • The Sorento EX ($35,990) turbocharges the engine and adds a hands-free liftgate, adaptive cruise control, enhanced forward collision mitigation, and lane-centering assistance.
  • The Sorento SX ($38,890) comes with a panoramic sunroof, a digital instrument panel, and 20-inch wheels.
  • The Sorento SX Prestige ($43,490) makes all-wheel-drive, leather upholstery, and ventilated front seats standard. You also get a 12-speaker Bose audio, a 360-degree camera, and a blindspot camera system.

Kia K5 insurance costs

The Kia K5 replaced the Kia Optima in 2021. A new name was the least of its changes: the redesigned cabin, stylish exterior, and long list of features put this midsize family sedan on every buyer’s list. Thankfully, the K5 kept the Optima’s modest price point.

On average, Kia K5 insurance costs $122 per month for state minimum insurance coverage and $221 per year for full coverage.

The K5 has a beefy list of driver-assistance aids, including:

  • Forward collision warnings with automatic braking
  • Lane-keeping assistance
  • Driver attention warnings
  • Rear cross-traffic alerts
  • Safe Exit Assist
  • Blindspot warnings
  • Automatic high beams

Little wonder that the 2023 K5 is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+.

With so much value upfront, the 2023 K5’s four trims focus on vanity and comfort. If you’re curious about their insurance costs, click the links to learn more.

  • The K5 LXS ($25,290) comes with a turbocharged 1.6L four-cylinder engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission. LED headlights, dual-zone automatic climate control, and an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto complete the package.
  • The K5 GT-Line ($26,690) includes LED foglights and taillights, a sporty black exterior, and a 10.25-inch touchscreen with integrated navigation.
  • The K5 EX ($29,190) adds a panoramic sunroof, rear parking sensors, and heated and ventilated front seats.
  • The K5 GT ($31,690) tops the line with a turbocharged 2.5L four-cylinder engine, 19-inch wheels, upgraded brakes, better suspension, and sports seats.

What factors affect Kia car insurance rates?

Your motor vehicle is just one factor in calculating your car insurance. The formula also includes:

  • The cost of your vehicle: The owners of exotic, luxury, and high-performance sports cars pay more for collision, comprehensive, and other coverage options.
  • The age of your vehicle: New cars cost more to insure because they cost more to repair, featuring more sophisticated technology and materials.
  • The cost of parts: The cheapest parts often belong to the most popular models and model years because they’re mass-produced and readily available.
  • Your age: Teen drivers pay the highest insurance rates until they turn 25. After that, your rates probably won’t go up again until you turn 75.
  • Your driving history and insurance and theft claims record: If you’re a safe driver, you’ll find lower rates with nearly every provider.
  • Your parking spot: You’ll pay more if your zip code has high accident or car theft rates.

Here are a few specific factors that impact auto insurance rates for Kia:

  • Imports: Kia vehicles are imported, which makes parts, repair, replacement, and insurance costs higher.
  • Safety: Many of Kia’s car models achieve Top Safety Pick awards if not Top Safety Pick+. Most have a four-star rating from the NHTSA, except for the excellent K5.
  • Reliability: Consumer Reports ranks Kia among the top ten most reliable car brands.
  • Availability: Due to Kia’s popularity, parts tend to be cheaper and more accessible.

Kia insurance cost for drivers with driving violations

Keeping a clean driving record will help you get the best insurance rates for your Kia. You may have seen an increase in your premiums if you committed any of the following violations within the last three to five years:

  • Speeding tickets
  • DUIs
  • At-fault accidents
  • License suspensions or revocations
  • Reckless driving

However, even high-risk drivers can find affordable rates if they know where to look.

Cheapest car insurance for Kia drivers with speeding ticket

Speeding tickets can stay on your record for up to a decade. Whether it’s due to a single ticket for a serious speeding violation or multiple tickets for minor infractions, that’s a long time to pay high insurance premiums!

How can I lower the cost of my Kia car insurance?

You might have found a great deal, but who can say no to cheaper car insurance? Here are some tips from Jerry’s team of expert insurance agents:

  • Bundle insurance policies: If you purchase a car and home insurance bundle from the same company, you’ll get a discount on both policies.
  • Choose a cheaper model year: When shopping for a Kia, look for a model that’s compact, easy to repair, and stuffed with safety features. You can also save a few bucks each month by buying used (either from a dealership or a private seller).
  • Install a telematics device: Telematics devices track your driving habits; drive cautiously and you could earn a car insurance discount.
  • Install a vehicle anti-theft device: An enhanced alarm system or engine immobilizer could lower your insurance rates.

Reduce your coverage: As a general rule of thumb, your car should be worth more than ten times the cost of your premiums. If it’s not, it might be time to drop full coverage.

  • Raise your deductible: Choosing the best car insurance deductible involves balancing how much you can afford to pay upfront against how much you’d like to save year by year.
  • Shop around: You can’t know if you’re getting the best deal unless you shop around! You can get dirt-cheap car insurance by comparing quotes from at least three different insurance companies.
