Ford’s expansion in Midwest manufacturing will create 6,200 unionized manufacturing jobs at plants in Michigan, Ohio, and Missouri. But the company’s promising an even bigger crop of jobs in the years to come: Ford and UAW estimate that the expansion will indirectly generate approximately 74,000 American jobs by 2026.
Let’s break it down a little further. The bulk of Ford’s investment will go to Michigan, where $2B will drive manufacturing of the all-new seventh-generation Mustang and second-generation Ranger, along with increased production of the wildly popular F-150 Lightning electric truck
. The Wolverine State’s getting an estimated 3,200 new jobs at plants in Flat Rock
, Wayne
, and Dearborn
. What about the other $1.7B? Most of that money ($1.6B, to be exact) is going to Ohio, where 1,900 new union jobs will enable production of the all-new commercial EV—a mystery vehicle we still don’t know much about. Since Ford recently announced production of a new battery-electric E-Transit van
, we might be looking at an electric version of the F-Series pickup, currently manufactured at Ohio’s Avon Lake
facility, to join the F-150 Lightning. Finally, a $95M investment and 1,100 union jobs will go to Missouri, where Ford’s focusing on production of the Transit and E-Transit cargo vans.
Workers’ rights are at the heart of the new investment plan
New cars and new jobs are exciting, but Ford’s new plan also includes plans to improve and protect workers’ rights—thanks to the bargaining efforts of the UAW. All 6,200 of those new jobs will include healthcare benefits from the very first day on the job. Ford has also committed to putting $1B into improvements to working conditions across its US plants over the next five years.
This is great news for auto workers in the Midwest—and it’s part of a move towards unionization in multiple industries across the country. Union jobs mean greater financial security for workers, making it easier to keep up with key expenses like car insurance.
