The DeLorean Motor Company’s iconic DMC-12 is making a 2022 comeback—as an all-electric vehicle. The reimagined Alpha5 will debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in August
The new DeLorean looks a lot like the car that Marty McFly took to the future and back in 1985, but this time it’s equipped with genuinely futuristic automotive technology. No, there’s no flux capacitor—but the Alpha5 promises to measure up to the cutting edge of EV tech with speed, power, and style.

The new electric DeLorean will hit 88 mph in just 4.35 seconds

Okay, it won’t take you into the future—as far as we know. But DeLorean promises that the all-new Alpha5 will speed from zero to 88 in under five seconds, and hit that 60-mph sweet spot in just 2.99 seconds. That’s not quite fast enough to catch the rock god of EVs, the
Tesla Model S
, but it’s plenty fast enough to take you back to the good old days of rock anthems and sports car greatness—at least in spirit.
Other estimated specifications for the Alpha5 include:
  • 100+ kWh battery (no Mr. Fusion included)
  • 155 mph top speed
  • 300+ mile range
  • 0.23 Cd drag coefficient
Past meets future in the Alpha5’s exterior, which combines the sleek, aerodynamic aesthetics of the best 21st-century EVs with the original DMC-12’s iconic gullwing doors. Lovers of the classic 80s wedge design might feel the new DeLorean’s curvaceous looks are a letdown, but that’s the price you pay for a world-class drag coefficient. For fans of the retro look, the four-seater coupe brings out the angles in the interior styling, as seen in brand-new images on the DeLorean Motor Company
website
And the big question: how much will the new electric DeLorean cost? The company has yet to release pricing information, but experts estimate that the DMC-12’s battery-powered offspring will start in the neighborhood of $175,000—so start saving now!
