Tennessee
boasts more than 40 wineries spread throughout the state with the vast majority, including local favorites like Arrington Vineyards and Mountain Valley Winery, located in Central and Eastern Tennessee, respectively.
For most people, Tennessee’s most famous drink is whiskey, but the state is quickly establishing itself as a producer of award-winning wines as well. Broken into three regions—West, Middle, and East—Tennessee has become famous for a variety of grape and fruit wines, often intimately tied to the soil and weather conditions of the region in which they’re grown.
To help you find the best wineries to visit first,
Jerry
, the world’s first

Check ahead to see if a food truck will be on-sight the day of your visit, or consider bringing a picnic if you’re looking to turn your visit into a meal.

Joey and Gail Chessor opened the beloved
Grinder’s Switch Winery
in 2006 and have been producing award-winning wines ever since. Located in the heart of Middle Tennessee in the rolling hills of Hickman County, the winery is surrounded by 110 acres of trees and farmland supporting a seven-acre Muscadine vineyard from which they produce many of their customers’ favorites, including the
award-winning Blondy
. The tasting room resides in the cozy hand-built log cabin that was once the family home.
The original Grinder’s Switch Winery, like most Middle Tennessee wineries, is really remote. To cater to customers in more urban settings, Joey and Gail opened a satellite location in Nashville’s historic
Marathon Village
. Guests are welcome to visit or plan a private tasting event.
Nearby: If you visit the
Nashville
location, you’ll have all that the city has to offer right at your fingertips. If you choose to travel out to the original Grinder’s Switch Winery, we suggest making it part of a Middle-Tennessee wineries tour with a stop at the relatively nearby Keg Springs before heading east to round out your tour at Arrington Vineyards

Lookout Winery and Pizzeria
has hacked the system when it comes to selling fresh food at a Tennessee winery—open a restaurant next door. Guests can enjoy 6- or 12-pour tastings at the tasting bar or head next door to enjoy wood-fired pizzas, salads, and desserts along with wines by the glass or the bottle.
Lookout’s wines are made with
California
grapes, but they’re fermented and bottled on-property by the Bordogna family. While the wine and food are fabulous, many come to Lookout just for the views—you can see three states from their hill-top patio!
Nearby: Lookout’s pizzas are known for miles around, but if you’re looking for something a bit less Italy and a bit more Tennessee, check out local favorite
Tupelo Honey
for modern takes on down-home Southern cooking.
