Address: 561 Township Rd. 3352 Loudonville, OH 44842
What is the story of Landoll’s Mohican Castle?
Easily one of the best castles in Ohio and a long-time dream realized, Landoll’s Mohican Castle opened to the public in 2002. Before the dream castle came to fruition, Jim Landoll, his wife Marta, her brother Marty, and $5 started The Landoll Publishing Company in the early 1970s.
By 1996, they were considered the second-largest publisher of children’s books in the U.S. and had business sales of $100 million.
The publishing company, though successful, was not the end goal. It was sold in 1997 so that the Landolls could focus on their longtime true dream of constructing a castle.
Landoll’s Mohican Castle was originally imagined as an elaborate barn with the look of a castle, but after some coaxing Marta convinced her husband Jim to turn it into a hotel.
Using the many fallen trees and stone piles on the property as building materials, the Landolls’ Mohican Castle spent five years in construction before it opened to the public.
In 2016, the castle was contacted by Gordon Ramsay’s TV show Hotel Hell to appear in their season finale. Although reluctant to participate at first, Landoll’s Mohican Castle saw significant improvements after the show and has been thriving ever since.

What is the story of Brumback Library Castle?
Named after John Sandford Brumback, this Ohio castle was constructed for The Van Wert Ladies Library Association, who ran a subscription library service for area residents.
John Sandford Brumback, their financial donor for whom the library is named, rose up from a childhood on the family farm to become the President of the Van Wert National Bank and a well-known businessman and philanthropist. Brumback offered financial support to the Van Wert Ladies Library Association and even drew up plans for the County Library before he died.
His family carried out his wishes, and his son, Orville Brumback, worked with the Ohio Legislature to make the Brumback Library the first tax-supported library in the country.
Brumback’s heirs continue supporting the castle today, and it is consistently ranked among the best libraries in the US.
