Would a Dodge Challenger be a good first car?

My son just got his license and wants a car. He loves Dodge Challengers and has been saving up for one. I’m going to supplement the purchase, but I want to help him buy a car that I feel good about. Is a Dodge Challenger a good first car?

He’s very lucky to have such a supportive parent! I hate to rain on your son’s parade, but a Dodge Challenger would not be a good first car. It’s incredibly fast—some Challenger models boast more than 800 horsepower—and could easily be abused by a teenager.
That said, there are some
Dodge Challenger
models that would make better first cars than others. If you do opt to purchase a Dodge Challenger for your son, I would recommend the
Challenger SXT
. Here are some reasons why:
  • It isn’t as fast or powerful (less than 300 horsepower)
  • Has a backup camera
  • Includes other safety features—including blind spot monitoring
That said, I think I’d stick to a trusty
Honda Civic
for your son’s first car. He can buy a snazzy Challenger when he’s a little older!
After your son gets his new ride, he’ll need
