Will running a red light make my car insurance premiums higher?

Will one ticket for running a red light make my insurance policy more expensive? I got my first ticket today, but I haven't had one in the 12 years I have been driving. My insurance is high enough as it is; will this ticket make it even higher?

“It is excellent that you have had such a
clean driving record
all these years! Sadly, even just one ticket will impact the rate of your policy.
The ticket won’t change the rate of your
car insurance
right away; it would be added on at the next policy renewal if your insurance carrier runs a new motor vehicle report. If they don’t, it may take a year before you see any premium change.
If your rate changes, contact your agent to make sure you are getting all of the discounts that you are eligible for and if any new ones can be added such as:
  • Defensive driver discount
  • Alumni and professional affiliations
  • Low mileage discount
  • Telematics discount
  • Multi-line discount
If you are still unhappy with your insurance, it is time to shop for a
cheaper insurance policy
. The easiest way to re-shop a policy is by comparing multiple insurance companies simultaneously.
