Will Progressive drop me if I get a DUI?
I’m currently covered with Progressive and I was wondering if there were certain convictions that would cause Progressive to stop covering me. Will Progressive drop me if I get a DUI?

Great question!
Like many insurers, Progressive may choose to drop your car insurance policy if you get a DUI—but it will depend on your individual case.
In general, having a DUI on your driving record labels you as a high-risk driver, which will increase your rates significantly and make it more difficult to secure coverage from standard insurers.
If you are dropped by Progressive for a DUI, your best option is to look for coverage from non-standard auto insurance companies, like The General or Dairyland, who are more dedicated to high-risk car insurance.
Aside from getting a DUI, here are a few other reasons why Progressive might decide to cancel or not renew your plan:
- Failure to pay your premiums
- Insurance fraud
- License suspension
- Multiple accidents within three years
- Three or more accidents or claims within a single policy term
Remember: Progressive is legally bound to send a cancellation notice if they do decide to drop you. Not only can this allow you time to secure a new policy so you can continue to fulfill your state’s insurance requirements, but it will also help you avoid the premium hikes that come with a lapse in your car insurance.
