Will My Dodge Charger Scat Pack Run Without A Catalytic Converter?
So I’ve got a Dodge Charger Scat Pack I’m thinking of taking the catalytic converter off. Is that going to affect my car’s performance at all? I know converters put some restrictions on the engine so I thought taking it off might boost horsepower. Is that right?

Great question! Thanks for asking! This is an issue that a lot of car owners have misconceptions about. The short answer is yes—your
Dodge Charger Scat Pack
will run without a catalytic converter. However, depending on the age of the car, there can be several performance issues. More importantly, it is illegal to tamper with your catalytic converter in any way. First off, most cars have two catalytic converters—one to handle NOx and one to handle CO and HC emissions. If you remove either, it’s going to affect your engine’s performance because the catalyst efficiency monitor will no longer be receiving readings from your downstream 02 sensors.
You’re really only going to see improved performance from removing the catalytic converters in older model cars—typically models made before 1996. Or, if you install aftermarket 02 sensors.
Even then, you’ll definitely fail any emissions tests. Besides, as was mentioned, removing a car’s catalytic converter is illegal. So, you’re going to want to leave it on there.
