Will my car insurance company pay for a rental vehicle while my car is being repaired?

I had a car accident over the weekend and I expect my car to be at the mechanic for the next week or two. I still need to commute to and from work every day and was curious if my insurance company will pay for a rental while my car is being repaired?

Answer
The period immediately after an accident can be confusing and stressful but you are doing the right thing by asking questions!
Your car insurance company will typically only pay for a rental vehicle while your car is being repaired if you have rental reimbursement coverage. You can check to see if you have this supplemental coverage on your policy’s declaration page.
If the accident was declared not-at-fault and due to the other driver’s negligence, their insurance company should pay the cost of your rental vehicle. Additionally, there are times where an insurance company will pay for the rental vehicle if your car is totaled, but they are not obligated to do so.
Some body shops provide rental cars for free since they are doing the repair work, so check with the repair shop as well.
Once your car has been repaired, the claim has been settled, and your rate has been adjusted, it may be time to shop around for a new car insurance policy.
