Will home insurance cover my AC unit?

I live in Florida, where summers can be…well, miserable. My AC unit just about croaked last year due to age, and I’m hoping to replace it before it gets hot again. It would be nice if I could get help paying for a replacement—will home insurance cover the AC unit?

Air conditioning was a wonderful invention, that’s for sure. Whether home insurance will cover your AC unit depends on what caused the damage.
In your case, it seems like the AC needs to be replaced due to normal wear and tear, which will not be covered by your insurer. Damage to objects due to negligence, normal aging, or avoidable causes (like a rat infestation) will never be covered by homeowners insurance.
Like for most objects, property damage coverage for an AC or HVAC unit only extends to the
named perils
on the policy. These include fire, theft, hailstorms, explosions, and more. Natural disasters like hurricanes and earthquakes are usually not named perils.
Additionally, the type of coverage for your AC unit depends on whether it is a central or a window unit. Window units are covered as house contents, while central units are structural elements of the house.
