Why won’t my 2015 Honda Odyssey’s sliding door open?

I drive a 2015 Honda Odyssey and earlier this week my drivers-side sliding door stopped working and I can’t open it—manually or using the remote. Why won’t my 2015 Honda Odyssey’s sliding door open?

There are a few reasons why your 2015
Honda Odyssey’s
sliding door might not be working correctly—the most common include: a frayed/broken cable, malfunctioning door motor/motor assembly, and a faulty door lock/latching mechanism.
  • Frayed/broken cable: the sliding doors’ internal cables help regulate the latching and unlatching procedure—these cables tend to fray over time and occasionally even snap, in which case the cable can get caught in the door’s pulley system or tubing and prevent the door from opening.
  • Malfunctioning door motor/motor assembly: the door motor/motor assembly experiences significant wear since it is the component that actually opens the latch and slides the door backward—if it breaks, you likely won’t be able to get the door open.
  • Faulty door lock/latching mechanism: the mechanism that locks and unlocks the sliding door—typically referred to as an actuator—can malfunction or break, rendering it difficult to open the door.
Of course, this is not an exhaustive list of why your 2015 Honda Odyssey’s sliding door won’t open—you could be dealing with something as simple as a broken roller, blocked track, or blown fuse.
In any event, we advise taking your car to a Honda dealer to have one of their professionals perform a diagnosis. When you clearly understand the issue’s true cause, you can then choose to attempt a DIY repair or hire a qualified mechanic.
