Why is my ceiling fan making a rattling noise?
My ceiling fan has been making the most annoying rattling noise for a few weeks now and I have no idea why. I’m hesitant to turn it on now because I’m afraid its going to fall or something. Why is my ceiling fan making a rattling noise?

I’m sorry to hear that you’re dealing with a rattling ceiling fan. There are a lot of reasons this could be happening so let’s go through the most probable ones.
You could be dealing with loose screws in which case you’re right to hesitate to turn it on. Screws may be loose in the connection points between the blades and the motor, or you may have loose screws in the motor housing. You should check your ceiling fan for loos screws before you turn it back on.
If your ceiling fan is connected to a dimmer switch, humming and rattling are common side effects. Dimmer switches are not intended to be used with ceiling fans so in this case, you are not in any danger but you may run the risk of damaging your ceiling fan’s motor. This issue should be looked at by a professional.
You may also be dealing with a capacitor issue. This is common in homes with many rooms on the same circuit as it results in low voltage for your fan’s motor. If you think this could be the case, have a professional come and replace your capacitor.
