The issue is the classic economic problem of high demand and low supply: Oil companies have limited access to crude oil and gasoline, while customers want to travel more than ever during the first summer since COVID restrictions have been lifted.
The reason for the low supply, though, is the war in Ukraine. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine upset the oil market, and President Joe Biden banned the import of Russian crude oil or gasoline. These two factors caused a scarcity of gas, driving the prices way up.
