Why is car insurance so expensive in Washington?

I moved to Seattle for school, and I’m pretty sure I’ll be eating microwave noodles this semester because my car insurance is looking much pricier than I expected. Why is car insurance in Washington so expensive?

A big reason why car insurance is so expensive in
Washington
is due to the high auto theft rate in cities such as Seattle, Bellevue, and Tacoma, where auto theft rates are some of the highest in the country.
That being said, there are a number of other factors contributing to Washington’s high average insurance rate:
  • Washington has a very high rate of uninsured drivers, hovering around 22%. To cover the costs of uninsured drivers, car insurance companies tend to increase premiums for drivers that are insured.
  • Healthcare costs are rising in the Evergreen State by roughly 7% a year. The bulk of insurers’ payouts cover medical costs, so when those numbers rise, premiums must go up to keep pace.
  • Washington sees its fair share of bad weather, such as earthquakes, wildfires, flooding, and drought—these events cause immense property damage, including to vehicles, so insurers boost their rates to counter these expected costs.
